DESPITE DIFFICULT TRADING CONDITIONS THE GROUP HAS POSTED EXCELLENT RESULTS FOR


THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 1999. TURNOVER INCREASED BY 61%, ATTRIBUTABLE INCOME


BY 154% AND HEADLINE EARNINGS PER SHARE BY 85%. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EARNINGS


PER SHARE AND HEADLINE EARNINGS PER SHARE, IS DUE TO NON-RECURRING RETRENCHMENT


AND DEVELOPMENT COSTS. THE GROUP HAS ACHIEVED ITS FORECAST HEADLINE EARNINGS


PER SHARE. FORECAST TURNOVER AND ATTRIBUTABLE INCOME WERE LOWER THAN EXPECTED


DUE TO THE DISPOSAL OF CONTINUUM SOLUTIONS (PTY) LTD, THE LIQUIDATION OF VISUAL.


COMMUNICATIONS (PTY) LTD AND THE DELAY IN THE ROLLOUT AT SELBY AFRICOM (PTY)


LTD. THE INCREASE IN EARNINGS REPORTED IS AS A RESULT OF STRONG ORGANIC GROWTH.

The army-civilian literary and art soiree called the "Spring of the Century" to greet the Spring Festival of 2000 was held at the China Theatre in Beijing on 1st February. Party and state leaders, including President Jiang Zemin, Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, Li Ruihuan, Hu Jintao, Wei Jianxing, and Li Lanqing, were present.
Also attending the soiree were Ding Guangen, Chi Haotian, Zhang Wannian, Luo Gan, Jia Qinglin, Wen Jiabao, Zeng Qinghong, He Luli, Ismail Amat, Wang Zhongyu, Zhao Nanqi, Zhou Tienong, and members of the Central Military Commission Fu Quanyou, Yu Yongbo, Wang Ke, Wang Ruilin, Cao Gangchuan, Guo Boxiong, and Xu Caihou.
Also attending the literary and art soiree were relevant departments of the central and state organs, the National Double-Support Work Leading Group, and leading comrades of Beijing Municipality, the four PLA General Departments, various major units in Beijing, the Armed Police Force, and the General Office of the Military Commission.
Party and state leaders Jiang Zemin, Zhu Rongji, Li Ruihuan, Hu Jintao, and Wei Jianxing attended a New Year Peking Opera show at the Zhongnanhai on the evening of 30th December. Also present at the show were Ding Guangen, Chi Haotian, Jia Qinglin, Zeng Qinghong, and Yang Rudai.
President Jiang Zemin visited a unit of the Beijing Military Area Command on 28th January today, passing on New Year greetings. He visited the barracks, shook hands with the soldiers and chatted about their living conditions and what culinary delights they are preparing for New Year's Eve and the days that follow during the festive period.
Jiang urged soldiers to learn political theory, study China's history and improve their military knowledge and skills.
Accompanying Jiang were other senior leaders including Hu Jintao, Zhang Wannian and Chi Haotian.
President Jiang Zemin today extended his New Year greetings to retired military veterans on 26th January. Jiang was present at a New Year performance with military veterans organized by the CMC to celebrate the upcoming Spring Festival.
Tang Youzhang, former adviser to the now defunct Ministry of Agricultural Machines, died of illness in Beijing at 94. Jiang Zemin, Zhu Rongji, Hu Jintao, Jia Qinglin, Zeng Qinghong, Zou Jiahua, and others extended condolences to his family.
Pu Jiexiu, honorary vice-chairwoman of the China Democratic National Construction Association, died of illness in Beijing on 13th January at 92. Jiang Zemin, Li Ruihuan, Wei Jianxing, Jia Qinglin, Wu Yi, and other comrades extended condolences on her death.
A book collecting important speeches and writings by Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, and Jiang Zemin on the supervision of cadres was recently published. The book was compiled by the Organization Department of the CCP Central Committee.
President Jiang Zemin recently sent a letter praising the activities of some outstanding youth volunteers. The Chinese communist Youth League's (CCYL) Central Committee has called on its local branches to study Jiang's words and expand youth volunteer programmes.
Since the CCYL Central Committee organized the volunteer plan in 1993, over 4,000 young people have helped more than 150 poverty-stricken counties.
President Jiang Zemin met a group of French entrepreneurs on 24th January including Ernest-Antoine Seilliere, chairman of the French Enterprises Movement (FEM) - formerly known as the French Federation of Employers.
Jiang expressed his appreciation for FEM's role in increasing mutual understanding between China and France and cooperation in the economic and trade sectors.
The French entrepreneurs will also visit Shanghai and Xiamen.
Jiang Zemin visited workers and staff members of state-owned enterprises and particularly inspected the work in scientific and technological innovation in Beijing on 24th January.
Accompanying General Secretary Jiang Zemin on the inspection tour were Li Lanqing, member of the Standing Committee of the CCP Central Committee Political Bureau and vice-premier of the State Council; Zeng Qinghong, alternate member of the Political Bureau and member of the Secretariat of the CCP Central Committee; Jia Qinglin, member of the CCP Central Committee Political Bureau and secretary of the Beijing Municipal CCP Committee; and Liu Qi, mayor of Beijing Municipality.
Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, wrote the title of a new colour pictorial, "Environment, Tourism, and Development," published recently by the Xinhua Publishing House.
Premier Zhu Rongji met outgoing and newly-appointed foreign ambassadors at the Great Hall of the People on 17th January.
The three outgoing ambassadors are Richard C. Smith from Australia, Rhafic Janhangeer from Mauritius and A.K.M. Farook from Bangladesh.
The 11 new ambassadors are Erich Buttenhauser from Austria, Pierre Passi from the Republic of the Congo, Rajab Mohammed Sukayri from Jordan, Bayer Mihaly from Hungary, Lefa Joseph Mokotjo from Lesotho, Haakon B. Hjelde from Norway, Zeljko Kirincic from Croatia, Igor Antonovich Litvin from Ukraine, Saleh Abdulla Albouanin from Qatar, Alberto Rodriguez Arufe from Cuba and Joseph Prueher from the United States.
The wife of Ma Man Kei, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and president of Macao's Chinese Chamber of Commerce, died of illness on 23rd January at 81. Li Peng, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee; and Qiao Shi, former chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, sent wreaths to extend condolences.
Ding Guangen, member of the Political Bureau of the CCP central Committee, secretary of the Secretariat, and director of the Propaganda Department of the CCP Central Committee, called on directors, performers and all working staff who were busily carrying out rehearsals of the Spring Festival evening programme at the studio of the Central Television Station on 2nd February.
Delegates to the fifth plenary session of the Sixth National Committee of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles celebrated the arrival of spring at Beijing's Peace Hotel on 22nd January. Ding Guangen, member of the Political Bureau, member of the Secretariat, and director of the Propaganda Department of the CCP Central Committee, was present at the gathering.
Ding Guangen, director of the Propaganda Department of the CCP Central Committee, had an informal discussion with veteran comrades in the publication circles in Beijing on 26th January. He relayed Jiang Zemin's directives on propaganda and ideological work and on building spiritual civilization. He urged comrades on the publication front to implement the party's publication policies, heighten political awareness and sense of responsibility, and suggest ways and means for the prosperity of China's publication undertakings.
The second congress of the China Young Volunteers Association closed in Beijing on 19th January. Ding Guangen attended the congress and presented awards to outstanding volunteers and volunteer collectives.
Ding Guangen met Peter Wolff, special adviser to the Chief Executive Officer of the US-based Time-Warner Group on 19th January. Time Warner successfully sponsored the Fortune Global Forum last year in Shanghai, and there are a lot of things for China and Time Warner to do together, Ding added.
A second national meeting to commend five-good civilized families (the Mengjie Cup) and advanced organizations for coordinating activities in building such families was held in the Great Hall of the People on 6th December. Ten five-good, civilized pacesetter-families, 100 five-good civilized families, and 36 advanced organizations for coordinating activities in building such families were commended at the meeting.
Those attending the meeting included Ding Guangen, member of the Political Bureau and the Secretariat and director of the Propaganda Department of the CCP Central Committee and chairman of the Central Guiding Committee for the Building of Spiritual Civilization, and Peng Peiyun, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and chairman of the All-China Women's Federation.
A tea party was held in Beijing on 28th January for some 2,000 retired senior officials on the occasion of the upcoming Spring Festival on 5th February.
On behalf of the central leadership, Vice-President Hu Jintao addressed the gathering and conveyed warm regards and high respect. The younger generation should learn the glorious traditions and lofty style of the elders and continue to bring them into full display in the new age, Hu noted. He also urged that the retired officials be cared for both politically and physically.
