Time

Climate
Temperate climate with well-marked seasons.
More than 85 per cent of the country's rainfall - averaging 700 mm in most parts of the mountain areas - falls from Oct to Apr.
Spring comes in August. Summer from Nov-Jan with average temperature 27 degrees C, rising to 32 degrees C in lowland areas.
Autumn days are warm. Winter from May-Jul with temperatures as low as - 7 degrees C in lowlands and -18 degrees C in highlands.
Snowfalls can occur on the highlands at any time of the year.
Clothing: In summer light, loose clothing is most comfortable, but include a raincoat. Spring and autumn clothing should include a jersey for the cool evenings. Heavy woollens, vests, windcheaters, socks and jackets are a must in winter. Warm clothing is also essential for a journey into the Maloti where severe weather conditions can be encountered any time of the year. Pack wool-lined boots, a well-padded windcheater or jacket and a double supply of jerseys.
Entry requirements
Passport: Required by all.
Visa: Visas are required by Australia, Canada, People's Republic of China, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, India, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, USA, all Asian countries, North African countries, Central African countries, West African countries, all eastern European countries, all EU countries except Denmark and UK, Far East.
Not required by tourists staying less than 30 days, however, entry and exit cards must be completed.
Visitors intending to remain in Lesotho for longer than 30 days should make application in advance to the Director of Immigration and Passport Services, PO Box 363, Maseru 100.
Currency: There is no restriction on foreign currency, but all transactions must be conducted in Maseru.
South African rand are in general circulation.
Traveller's cheques are acceptable.
Health precautions
Mandatory: Yellow fever and cholera vaccination for visitors from infected areas.

National airline: Lesotho Airways (regular international flights to Johannesburg, South Africa); the national airline is to be privatised.

Surface access
Road: Good tarred roads from South Africa into the south and west of the country. With the implementation of the Highlands Water Project, the road network is being expanded.
There are 12 border control posts from South Africa. Because of the ruggedness of terrain in some parts of the Mokhotlong and Qacha's Nek districts, four-wheel-drive vehicles are advised.
Rail: Lesotho does not have its own rail system, although Maseru is linked to the South African system for freight traffic only. There are important railheads at Maseru and at Ficksburg (South Africa).
Hotels
Lesotho has a number of comfortable, international-class hotels in the capital city, Maseru.
Throughout the rest of the country, each district has accommodation, ranging from medium-sized hotels to smaller tourist lodges.
Bills subject to tax of 12 per cent. Tip of 10 per cent is usual.
Credit cards
Major credit cards are acceptable.
Car hire
Driving licences issued in most countries are valid in Lesotho for a period of up to six months, provided they are printed in English or are accompanied by a certified translation. International driving permits are also recognised.
National transport
Air: Lesotho Airways operates services linking Maseru with all main centres. Regular flights include Maseru-Qacha's Nek and Maseru-Mokhotlong. Charter companies in Lesotho are Highlands Air and Senqu Air.
Road: Over 3,500 km of tarred, gravel and dirt roads. Approximately 500 km are tarred.
Roads are being continuously upgraded, and tarred roads connect main towns in seven out of 10 districts.
A spin-off of the Highlands Water Project is the opening-up of the interior of the country to two-wheel drive vehicles.
Surfaced roads link Maseru with Butha Buthe in the north and with Quthing in the south and highlands scheme in the east. Other roads can be rough, especially in mountain areas.
For visitors using their own vehicles in Lesotho, a parking disc is necessary to park on certain public roads. These can be obtained from Lesotho Tourist Board Information Office or the Town Clerk, LNDC Centre, 4th Floor, Kingsway, Maseru.
Seat belts are compulsory. The driver of the car must carry valid international licence at all times. Traffic drives on the left.
In winter, antifreeze is a wise precaution for all cars with watercooled engines. Chains are useful in mud and snow. Petrol can be obtained in all District Headquarter towns but is not easily obtainable elsewhere.
Buses: Lesotho is well served by mainly privately owned buses. Coach services operate Maseru-Welkom; Maseru-Qacha's Nek.
Rail: Lesotho's only railway station is at Maseru, which is served by a 26 km long branch line from the Bloemfontein-Durban line. The passenger service has been discontinued for some time and only goods trains enter Lesotho.
