Forecast growth in air cargo traffic combined with a lukewarm demand for new-build freighters has resulted in a booming market passenger-to-freighter conversions, and Italy's Aeronavali is intent on taking advantage of the situation.
The large number of relatively low-priced passenger aircraft available and the downward pressure on cargo yields make converting used aircraft an attractive option for many freight haulers. Indeed, Boeing has predicted that over 70% of the roughly 3,000 freighters that will be in service by 2018 will be modified as opposed to purpose-built aircraft.
This trend has not gone unnoticed. ``Our market analysis sees an increase in widebody conversions,'' said Pompeo Sorice, Aeronavali's managing director. ``We're open to invest to meet market demand.''
Aeronavali, which has been overhauling, maintaining and modifying commercial and military aircraft for more than 50 years, is one of the world's largest conversion specialists. It was one of a handful of companies that Boeing signed up last year to be part of a an international network of modification and engineering facilities to provide retrofit packages for Boeing or Douglas-made commercial aircraft. Work it has done or is doing for Boeing includes converting MD-11s to freighters and converting DC-10s to MD-10s, which, among other things, entails installation of the Boeing Advanced Common Flight deck (see related story).
Aeronavali's passenger-to-freighter conversion business began 15 years ago when it converted a DC-8 to full freighter. In all, Aeronavali converted 47 of the Douglas-made aircraft. The success of that program led to a contract with McDonnell Douglas to do DC-10 conversions.
Earlier this year, Aeronavali, which now specializes in DC-10 and MD-11 conversions, signed an agreement to convert up to nine (six firm and three option) DC-10-30s for Finova Capital Corp. The Finova contract, which has a potential value of about $70 million, brings to 97 the number of DC-10/MD-11 conversions Aeronavali has on its books. Fifty-seven of those are firm orders and 40 are options. Add the 40 converted aircraft delivered as of mid-February, and Aeronavali's total rises to 137 aircraft. The last of the firm conversions on order is slated for delivery in 2006. Customers to date include Boeing, airlines and leasing companies.
Aeronavali has annual revenues of about $180 million and, according to Gianni Tritto, vice president-commercial, conversions represent as much as 50% of its business. The other half is split between maintenance on military aircraft (30%) and commercial aircraft (20%).
Looked at another way, 60% of Aeronavali's revenue comes from the commercial side and 40% from the military side, Tritto said, adding that the commercial side of the business likely will grow more than the military. The company's strategy is to increase its commercial work while retaining a significant presence in the military sector.
Conversions and modifications represent 80% of the commercial work. In addition to DC-10s and MD-11s, Aeronavali also works on DC-8s, 727s, 707s, Airbus A300s and ATRs. Recent programs included a major MD-80 avionics upgrade for Alitalia and DC-10-30 heavy checks for AOM French Airlines. Currently, Aeronavali has six lines doing modification and maintenance work. Four of the lines are located in Venice, where the company is headquartered, and two are located in Naples at a facility acquired in 1994.
Aeronavali plans to have eight lines open by the end of the year, according to Sorice. The two new lines are located at a maintenance facility in Brindisi that Aeronavali acquired from Agusta. Only military aircraft are handled there now, but Aeronavali plans to introduce commercial aircraft work, likely on the DC-10, by year-end.
On the military side, half of Aeronavali's revenues come from maintenance work and half from conversions. Aircraft it works on include the G.222, the C-130, the 707 AWACS and the Atlantique ATL-1. The company has done Boeing 707 passenger-to-tanker conversions for the Italian Air Force and, for NATO, has reconfigured other 707s to trainer/cargo aircraft.
Aeronavali also does some manufacturing work. It makes the kits needed to convert the DC-10 and supplies the cargo door for the MD-11 freighters. On the military side, it manufactures some components for the Tornado and the G.222.
