Glaxo Says Relenza
Is Approved by FDA
For U.S. Marketing
LONDON -- Glaxo Wellcome PLC said Tuesday the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Relenza (zanamivir), a treatment for influenza A and B, for marketing in the U.S.
The FDA's approval follows an extended regulatory review period after Glaxo's initial application in February wasn't recommended for approval by the agency's antiviral drug advisory committee.
Relenza is already marketed in Australia and New Zealand and has been approved in all 15 countries of the European Union and Switzerland.
Glaxo said Relenza prevents the spread of infection from one cell to another within the respiratory tract, the primary site of viral replication. It is the first of a new class of drugs known as neuraminidase inhibitors.
The drug is delivered direct to the airways via an inhaler, thereby optimizing delivery to the respiratory tract and reducing the potential for systemic absorption and consequently the potential for side effects. Clinical studies have shown that Relenza has a safety profile similar to a placebo.
Glaxo said clinical trials involving more than 6,000 patients showed patients treated with Relenza had less severe symptoms of influenza throughout the course of their illness, recovered more quickly, and returned to their normal lives more quickly than those receiving placebos.
Relenza was developed by Glaxo under license from Australian company Biota Holdings Ltd.
Westcon Purchases Comstor.net
NEW YORK -- Westcon Group Inc., a subsidiary of Datatec Ltd., a South African networking company, said it purchased Comstor.net Corp. for approximately $100 million (93.9 milllion euros) in cash.
Westcon of New York distributes networking equipment from vendors such as 3Com Corp., Nortel Networks Corp. and Lucent Technologies Inc. to equipment resellers.
Comstor.net is part of a division of General Electric Capital Corp. that also distributes networking equipment to resellers. It's biggest vendor is Cisco Systems Inc. The company, based in Virginia, had sales of over $400 million last year.
Westcon executives said the transaction expands the company's geographic reach and also gives it Cisco as a large vendor. Comstor.net also has expertise in serving resellers who cater to the federal marketplace.
The combined companies will have revenues of more than $1.5 billion, Westcon executives said.
Alcatel Gets China Unicom Pact
China Unicom awarded Alcatel a $6.8 million (6.6 million euros) contract to provide optical transmission equipment for its new global system for mobile communications project in the southwest province of Sichuan, according to the China Daily.
The new system, an extension of Unicom's existing GSM network in the province, will cover 10 cities and prefectures, the newspaper said. It gave no further details.
China Unicom, set up in 1994, is one of only three Chinese telecommunications companies, second to China Telecom.
Telekom Malaysia's Ghana Lines
Telekom Malaysia Bhd. will double the number of telephone lines in Ghana in two years, said government news agency Bernama.
Telekom Malaysia has a 25.5% stake in Ghana Telecoms.
Malaysia's biggest telecom carrier will also widen its customer base in Ghana by 500,000 by offering more services, including payphone and cellular services, Telekom Chief Excutive Mohamed Said Mohamed Ali said. He added that Telekom Malaysia's investments outside the country benefited Malaysian contractors and suppliers. Last year, the company signed contracts valued at $150 million to supply telecommunication products to Ghana, according to Bernama.
Thai Telephone, Creditors in Pact
Thai Telephone & Telecommunication PLC agreed in principle with its creditors to restructure 38 billion baht (99 million euros) of debt.
The company's executive vice president for finance, Witit Sujjapong, said Thai Telephone signed a deal last week with a central bank debt-restructuring advisory committee agreeing to start the process of negotiating its debt restructuring. Details weren't finalized but would be worked out under the guidance of the committee.
"The agreement will help us have a clearer time frame for our debt restructuring," said Mr. Witit. He said that he expected the debt-restructuring process to be completed within six months.
"We will present details of our debt-restructuring plan to creditors in the next two months. We are now in the process of seeking a consultant," he said.
Briefly:
-- Nokia Oyj, the Finnish telecommunications equipment maker, said it had received a mobile network expansion order worth $40 million (37.6 million euros) from New World Mobility of China. Nokia will provide base stations and related equipment to expand New World's Hong Kong GSM1800 network, which currently serves more than 390,000 subscribers. The Chinese operator is owned by New World PCS Limited, a subsidiary of New World Telephone Group of Hong Kong.
-- Telescan Inc., a provider and operator of online financial Web sites, said a unit of General Electric Co. is boosting its holdings in the firm through a $25 million (23.5 million euros) investment. Telescan said GE Capital's Equity Capital Group will hold a 14.2% stake with its new purchase of 1.1 million in Telescan shares. As part of the investment, Telescan also will add two years to its original 3-year contract to provide content for GE's CNBC.com business and financial Web site.
-- GoodHome.com Corp., a new online furnishings company, said it has received $50 million (46.9 million euros) in funding from investors that include units of Hearst Corp. and Mattel Inc. The company said the infusion is one of the largest initial funding rounds to date for an Internet startups.
-- Australia's Pracom Ltd. said it has bought KLM Group, a private telecommunications concern for A$6.5 million (3.9 million euros). The purchase is expected to add more than A$20 million to revenue, and A$2 million to earnings before interest and tax, Pracom said.
