‘Director Kim Tae-shik’ of Tourism Environment Enhancement Department at KTO

“All public officials should handle their duties from tourism-friendly perspectives”

How would you do if you followed a road sign for a tourist attraction, and end up being in the wrong place? If you find accommodation places dirty and expensive, along with terrible foods and heavy traffic, do you like to revisit the country? Most of you will say “NO.” As seen in this case, the tourism environment including accommodation, food, information, and traffic serves as the criteria for visiting a country. Most advanced countries in tourism sector have well-established tourism environment. Then, who is responsible for improving Korea’s tourism environment? Our reporter met with Director Kim Tae-shik’ of Tourism Environment Enhancement Department at Korea Tourism Organization.
Written & photographed by Reporter Jeong Yun-ju at Sangmyung University
Q. Briefly introduce yourself, please.

A. I have worked for this organization over three decades since 1979. I have been pursuing a variety of projects while working in the tourism field, including “Visit Korea Year 2001” initiative. After serving as the president of the overseas branches including in Toronto and LA for nine years, I was appointed as the Director of Tourism Environment Enhancement Department at the end of last year.

Q. What do you do?

A. In short, I work to improve Korean tourism environment such as accommodation, foods, information, traffic and amenities. To take some examples, our department had monitored 124 attractions in 50 tour courses nationwide between last year and this summer in an effort to improve the overall tourism industry, and has been conducting ‘Goodstay’ project which is designed to provide certification to exemplary accommodation facilities. This program has received warm responses from tourists and such facilities are emerging as hot items in the accommodation industry. Moreover, we have also developed one-day Hanok Experience program, operated in four different languages, in collaboration with traditional Korean-style houses across the nation. Besides, we have published a booklet introducing representative cuisines in each local area and promoted to improve street signs.

Q. What Korea needs to improve, compared to other advanced countries in tourism?

A. I don’t think Korea’s tourism infrastructure is far behind other countries. However, we need to improve public awareness and perception as an advanced tourism industry. For example, Koreans tend to show greater hospitality to Western tourists than to their Asian neighbors. We should make continued efforts to remove the discrimination. Although we need to develop better tourism systems as well as products, the most fundamental thing for us is to create sound civility.

Q. Do you have any advices for the tourism policy of Jongno district?

A. Jongno is home to a host of palaces and cultural assets, with a well-established tourism infrastructure. I have heard that the ward office established its Culture and Tourism Bureau to advance its tourism field. Tourism, however, is not something to be done with the tourism bureau alone. It should be closely related to non-tourism sectors including engineering, cleaning, and urban planning. The government officials in these sectors should handle their duties with tourism-friendly mindset. In addition, the district should develop cultural items that show its distinctive features. If Jongno district can find its own cultural elements that can combine tradition and modern living, differentiated from its neighborhoods, tourists and profits will naturally follow.

Q. Finally, what do you think tourism is?

A. I’d like to say “Everything beyond our ordinary living is tourism.” Not just making a departure from our living to visit a new place, but also having new experience little away from hustle and bustle of our life constitute tourism. A country where tourists like to visit is a good country to live in.

| Feature of the Month | Gwanghwamun Square

Gwanghwamun Square where past meets with present and future

Written & photographed by Reporter Lee Seong-jun at Sungkyunkwan University

* An air view of Gwanghwamun Square Ice Skating Link
Recovery as a human-centered space

Take the subway line 5 and get off at Gwanghwamun station. An exit full of vitality and vigor is directly connected to Gwanghwamun Square that was opened in August 1. The reporter visited the plaza where giant statues of Haechi, a lion-like creature that appears in Korean myths, stand in front of the square.

It is not an exaggeration to say that Gwanghwamun Square was transformed into a human-centered space. Gwanghwamun, once the center of the capital city of the Joseon Dynasty, had government offices on both sides of the road, called “Yukjo Geori.” The street of six ministries was a bustling place crowded with people. However, in the wake of rapid industrialization and modernization the street was turned into a place crammed with modern buildings and heavy traffic. In an effort to restore the historicity of Yukjo Street and offer a culture-filled space with a panoramic view of Gyeongbokgung and Bugaksan, the Seoul city government had launched a massive construction on May 27, 2008 and reopened the place to the public in August 1, 2009. The new Gwanghwamun Square is now restored as the people-centric place featuring a variety of amenities and interesting exhibits. In addition, the artificial pond and foundations installed in front of the statue of Admiral Yi Sun-shin attract the eyes of people passing by and office workers in the surrounding area. Sejong-ro is no longer the place representing the busy modern Seoul, but reborn as a place for citizens.
A landmark place representing Korea

There is a statue that catches the eyes the moment you enter the square. It is the statue of King Sejong which made its debut at the square on October 9, which is Hangeul Day. He was the inventor of the Korean alphabet, Hangeul, and is perhaps the most respected king in Korean history. Citizens and tourists gathered around the statue were busy taking photos at the backdrop of the statue.

On the eastern and western edges of the square, there are "Waterways of History." Key historical events that have happened since 1392, when the Joseon Dynasty was established, are engraved on the stone floor of the waterway on the eastern edge of the square. Walking along the waterway offers insightful look into the joy, delight, sorrow and anguish of the Korean history. The floor of the waterway on the western edge is left empty so it can be updated in the future. Hoping that the empty space will be filled with a wealth of delightful memories in the future, the reporter moved on to a next destination.

A space filled with fascinating moments

The Story of King Sejong exhibition hall is located in the underground beneath the statute of the great King. Here, King Sejong’s great achievements, the process of the invention of Hangeul and a variety of artifacts using the Korean alphabet are displayed. There were long lines of foreign tourist in the exhibition hall since it offers various foreign language services and well organized tour courses. Visitors are amazed by the beauty of Hangeul and fascinating artworks created by the Korean alphabet. Tourists can also view the past, present, and future of Seoul through the display of an old map of Seoul and the birthplace of King Sejong in the Joseon Dynasty.
Across the street from Gwanghwamun Square toward KT building is located “Green Growth Experience Center EGG Hall.” The EGG Hall is designed to raise the public awareness on the necessity of Green Growth and the current status in Korea, and offer opportunities for everyone to experience and understand Green Growth in their daily lives. The hall features fans powered by bicycle generators, an electric car, a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, along with the display of a model of a future village utilizing alternative energy sources.
You might be surprised to know that you can see great performances for the unbelievably low price of 1,000 won. At the KT Art Hall, you can see music performances and visit art gallery for this low price. All of the proceeds from these events are donated to a charity, so the value of the concerts is in fact a lot more than the 1,000won ticket price.
After visiting several places, the reporter’s stomach was growling. There were a wide variety of restaurants in this area, which is located in Seoul’s central district, nearby Jonggak, Gwanghwamun and Gyeongbokgung subway stations. Among the multitudes of restaurants displaying dazzling signs, a Korean traditional restaurant was attracting lots of tourists and citizens alike. The restaurant, located in front of the exit 8 at Gwanghwamun station, is specialized in Bindaetteok, a Korean-style pancake. Inside the hall, several foreigners were enjoying the delicious traditional Korean food, struggling with using chopsticks.
A great place to relish the winter

Like other attractions, Gwanghwamun Square changes into a new cloth when a new season comes. Open for its first season, Gwanghwamun square is transforming into an ice skating rink, open from December 11 to February 15. With a capacity to have about 700 skaters floating on the rink, the skating arena will be opened to the citizens and tourists so they can have relaxing and memorable experience with their friends and family. Moreover, a photo transmitting system will be installed around the arena to allow people to send their photos taken while skating. The Seoul city government also plans to establish a resting place for worried parents over their children’s safety. Since the place will be located on the upper level, parents can look out at the ice staking rink surface.

In addition, Seoul city will hold a one-month winter festival featuring large-scale decorative lights. Under the main theme of "Miracle Seoul: Seoul designed with lights," the second Hi Seoul Winter Light Festival will be held in the middle of December, following last year. During this year’s festival, citizens can participate in an event that will be broadcasted live on media. Moreover, lights will be set up and a variety of illumination artworks will be displayed around the square to present festive light performances.

Gwanghwamun Square has a wide variety of activities, exhibitions, performances and cuisines restaurants in its surrounding areas. It will be a great idea to spend this weekend, or take a trip during the winter, to the human-centered square, away from the hustle and bustle of mundane life.

‘Sotdae’, A place with generosity and delicious meals

Written & photographed by Reporter Lee Eun-ji at Sungkyunkwan University

Sotdae Shabu Shabu with generosity and delicious meals

Without a doubt, there is nothing like a good hot bowl of soup to warm you from a sudden cold snap. Along with this, if you can have a variety of nutrition, it would be like adding luster to what is already beautiful. There is a famous restaurant specializing in Shabu Shabu will satisfy your taste.

Shabu Shabu with quality ingredients and deep flavor

The fame of the Sotdae Shabu Shabu lies in its broth recipe. Its broth made of dried pollack gives light but sweet flavors. Although the pollack ingredient is more expensive than anchovy and kelp, the owner of the restaurant sticks to his cooking principles stressing decent flavors with quality ingredients. The soy sauce with the sweet smell of katsuobush marries well with the ingredients, making a delicious and light meal.

Then, what is the secret to enjoy the Sotdae Shabu Shabu in a perfect way? The owner Heo Dong-hyeok said it is better to dip and serve the ingredients in a small portion, instead of putting them in a pot at once. Even those who have never had Shabu Shabu will enjoy the meal thanks to the professional and friendly serving staffs.
Sotdae means “Raise Vitality”

Once located in a back alley in Daehak-ro, Sotdae moved to a new, spacious location. Although its original cozy traditional Korean atmosphere is reduced, its comfortable and modern decoration and design attracts long lines of people. The name of the restaurant, which means raise vitality, reflects the wishes of the owner Heo who wants everyone visiting the eatery to feel plentiful and abundant. The restaurant is located in Hyehwa-dong, and its delicious Shabu Shabu and Kalguksu are worthy of the wait.

| Inside Our Neighborhood | Pyeongchang-dong

Pyeongchang-dong, a place with something special.

Written and photographed by Reporter Gang Hye-won at Sangmyeong University

Pyeongchang-dong, street of galleries

At the threshold of deepening arts

Many Seoulites still consider Pyeongchang-dong as a wealthy neighborhood. The area lined with up-scale houses has put on a new face as an art district. Pyeongchang-dong art district is emerging as a new mecca of the Korean art community.
Walk up a hilly road leading to Bugak Tunnel, and the entrance to Gana Art Center comes into sight. Designed by world-renowned architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, the gallery reflects the essence of the modern Western design that considers the harmony between function and aesthetics. The interior has been built optimally for displaying art exhibits. Some say that the settlement of Gana Art Center initiated the creation of the culture and art district.
A little up from Gana Art Center stands Kim Chong Yung Museum, which was established in 2002, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the great sculpture’s death. Entrance of the museum stands a beautiful pine tree. Visitors can easily feel a distinct atmosphere because of the calmness, harmony and artistic vibes, something which is missing from hectic city life.
But, this is nothing but a beginning. Total Museum of Contemporary Art, which is decorated as if the museum itself is an artwork, offers another must-see sight. Its wooden floor, exposed concrete, old garden and various objets render the space as an enticing artwork itself. After walking along the road, you will encounter other art galleries such as Growrich Art Gallery, Gallery Sejul, and Gallery KIMI. At the end of the road stands Young-In Literary Museum. The literary museum is run by former Culture Minister Lee Eo-ryeong and literary critic Gang In-suk, and exhibits manuscripts, portraits and paintings of Korea's literary giants which were collected by Lee for 13 years. Located at the foot of the Mt. Bukhansan, the galleries create a pleasant atmosphere in harmony with the tranquil and beautiful landscape.
The place brimmed with flavors and tastes

After going around the galleries, the only thought in your head is a steaming bowl of rice. When you visit restaurant Gangchon Ssambap, located across the street from Gana Art Center, you will be pleased to see all kinds of fresh green vegetables.

Gangchon Ssambap is set with 9 side dishes, vegetables, meats, beanpaste soup and Yeongyang Dolsotbap. If you look at the table, you can feel the simplicity of your home which is set by vegetables and all kinds of seasoned herbs gathered directly by your mother. Also, thick beanpaste soup is in harmony with seasoned herbs and meats in Ssam together with deep taste unlike other restaurants flavor with seasonings. The best menu of them is Yeongyang Dolsotbap that a ginkgo nut, a bean and a sweat potato put on boiled rice. In addition to it, you can enjoy Nurungjitang pouring hot water in it. I think that the simple & rich table of Gangchon Ssambap with fresh vegetables and herbs causing me think of my home is the reason titled ‘Tasting Restaurant of Phyeongchang-Dong’.
If I had been satisfied with my hunger, I bring a cozy place to my mind. One fascination of Pyeongchang-dong is an elegant and graceful residential area unlike other towns with high-rise apartments which are sprang up. If you come a cup of fragrant tea to your mind looking down such beautiful houses and town, what do you think of enjoying a café ‘Motte’ next to Gana Art Center?
Its handmade cheese cakes, fragrant coffee and comfortable and cozy atmosphere usher passers into the inside. Its peaceful music sound as well as good aroma of coffee reaches comfortably my ears as if it makes us keep composure of mind in a busy life and also, the atmosphere seems to comfort our tired mind.
Pyeongchang-dong, the historical traces living there…

If you are walking along with Bukhansan (Mt.) in Pyeongchang-dong for a walk after satisfying with your hunger, you can meet with a shrine ‘Bohyeongsansingak’. It was named because it is a shrine for the god of a mountain at Bohyeonbong (Peak) which is a mountain ridge spreading to Pyeongchang-dong and is simpler than I expected. It sizes one front room together with a gambrel roof and ancient residents had prayed their peace and stability by holding a religious service there. Pyengchang-dong has several historical traces as well as such Bohyeonsansingak. In the front of Pyeongchang Hall for the Elderly, you can see ‘Former Site of Byeolgigun Army Training Camp’ where a new-style army ‘Byeolgigun’ which was established in the 18th year of an emperor ‘Gojong’ at the end of Joseon Dynasty had trained and the place indicating ‘Site of Pyeongchang’ where was a warehouse for provisions of Chongyungcheong for the purpose of defending the Northern Seoul at the latter period of Joseon. Also, ‘Site of Jojiseo’ which had made Korean paper in ancient times is locating around Segeomsjeong connected from Pyeongchang-dong to Sinyeong-dong. Even so, these traces take an interest in seeking them because they are hidden as if they seem to find out historical picture puzzles.

Pyeongchang-dong is a place hiding specialty in its composure. If you want to find out special things, let’s go to Pyeongchang-dong. Right now…

‘Naejangsan’s Snow Flowers are more beautiful than autumn leaves

If people think of ‘Naejangsan’, generally they bring ‘autumn leaves’ to mind. But Naejangsan (Mt.) of winter season is very beautiful as it remains an unforgettable winter travel in my memory. Let’s go to Naejangsan (Mt.) to enjoy its snow scene holding the feast of beautiful snow flowers rather than autumn maple leaves exhausted by crowded people.

Generally, the climbing for Naejangsan Snow Flowers means the course turning around a narrow path at the rear of Naejangsa. The clean and fresh tracking course (it will takes about 1 and half hour) of 3.6km from ‘Iljumun’, Wonjeogam’, ‘Byeongnyeonam’ to ‘Naejangsa’ is great for a temple tour because it is able to look widely around the main temple and a monk’s cell.
The way to a temple ‘Wonjeogam’ is a gentle and convenient path. Even though there is a sharp stone stairway beneath ‘Wonjeogam’, but clean valley water fall down along with the tunnel of snow flowers and ‘Bijarim’ consisting of armful trees with hundreds ages, the snowscape of forest of bamboo and the shape of snow-covered mountain bamboos are continued. The tunnel of snow flowers is continued from Wonjeogam to Byeongnyeonam. The snow flowers bloom at the colony of black oak trees of various species such as Quercus mongolica, Quercus serrata Thunberg (Konara Oak), an Oak Tree and etc. Also, mistletoe’s life power hanging in clusters on a tree like the nest of a magpie is a good sight, and the scenery of Byeongnyeonam facing at a snow-covered road is the best, too. The front yard of a temple is an observatory, and strange rocks and bizarre stones of 9 peaks such as Sinseonbong and Jebibong in the front of the observatory and Bulchulbong and Seoraebong, etc. in the rear of it surround a temple like a lotus. People are captivated by the beauty of stone peaks soaring high into the sky in the upper part of blue pine trees and a white ridgeline of a forest.
Even though you do not climb, it is sufficient for you to enjoy the feat of snow flowers by looking easily around the scenery of such area using a cable car and then walking lightly along the natural roads. Winter approaches so soon, let’s enjoy fully the snow flowers of Naejangsan (Mt.).

New Tourist Attraction ‘Kwangjang Market’ with rich foodstuffs

Written by | 아키야마 미호(영문명)

More beautiful the night of Kwangjang Market than daytimes

Hello, I’m 아키야마 미호 who is a reporter of Seoulnavi. Seoulnavi is a website to offer a lot of tourism information to local citizen in Japan who wants to travel Korea. I think that foreign people think the same, but especially Japanese tend to plan very carefully an itinerary before travelling. Some Japanese make a plan for even a type of a meal or a menu. So, the reporters of Seoulnavi have collected helpful information of the every nook and corner of Seoul and written an article for them.

I who have loved travelling had a travel by chance in Korea with my sister. At that time, I was charmed with Korea and then I learnt Korean and became a tourism reporter introducing Korea to Japanese after that.
I brought back ‘Kwangjang Market’ when I who have a job to travel here and there in Korea was asked for introducing tourist attractions of Jongno-gu to foreigners. Of course, there are lots of famous spots in Jongno! For example, Insa-dong, Gyeongbokgung (Palace), etc... But individually I like Kwangjang Market so much. The market in daytimes is good, but the market in nighttimes is more beautiful. Specially, I love Kwangjang Market because of lots of delicious foodstuffs.
The scenery of Kwangjang Market

The Entrance of Kwangjang Market

With a lady in Kwangjang Market
“About 90% or more among Japanese visit Seoulnavi in order to search for a tourism course, the article of Kwangjang Market was successful for offering a new tourism course not Namdaemun (the South Gate of Seoul) to many Japanese and also, it attracted the great attention of Japanese who want to enjoy the popular places for common people and their taste like me.”
The street of snack stalls, a flat cake house, Japanese love Yukhoi (Korean-Style Raw Beef) so much, the taste of Yukhoi enjoying at Kwangjang Market is really really delicious… Many people used to visit here to comfort their daily exhaustion together with colleagues or friends in the evening.
New Tourist Attractions

Seoulnavi wrote a special article about Kwangjang Market to introduce its vitality to Japanese. We introduced the foodstuffs of Kwangjang Market according to the taste of Japanese even through a map indicating the shops on a large scale. About 90% or more among Japanese visiting Korea visit the website of Seoulnavi to search for a tourism course, and besides, the article was successful to offer new tourism sources not Namdaemun (the South Gate of Seoul) to many Japanese and also, it attracted the great attention of Japanese who want to enjoy the popular places for common people and their taste like me. As a result, NHK collected news materials about Kwangjang Market and broadcasted it, too. Now, several tourism magazines have introduced it and some magazines have made its map.

Still, many foreign tourists bring back Namdaemun Market or Dongdaemun Market if they have a plan to visit Korean traditional market. What it is known well means it was changed as much. Many merchants of Kwangjang Market can not speak English or Japanese. But, it is not always necessary for speaking well foreign languages to go shopping. I think that a language is not a big problem if they have a warm heart to welcome tourists. Individually, I hope that the market will keep the shape of Korean marketplace with the common life of Korean people as it is. If I say improvements, only, it is not convenient for foreigners to find out a toilet and it closes early at 10:00 pm. In addition, if the street of Hanbok (Korean traditional clothes), snack stalls, Yukhoi (Korean-style Raw Beef), etc. in accordance with a product item are introduced on a map, is it easy for foreigners to find out tasty foodstuffs?

| Daehan Medical Center | Special Products and Places

Daehan Medical Center’ keeping the history of modern medical science as it is’

Autumn that leaves are fallen down from a ginkgo tree under the blue sky… If you are walking down the asphalt road of Seoul National University Hospital covered with yellowish ginkgo leaves, you may face a western-styled modern building decorated with red bricks between the inner buildings painted in white color. △Signboard in Chinese △ Western-Styled Clock Tower △ Antique Western-style Building with an Arched Door. How many people know that this building have stood the site from the rough wind and waves of Japanese Colonial Period up to now? I met with ‘Daehan Medical Center (Historic Sites 248, located at 28, Yeongeon-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, Korea)’ keeping the history of Korean modern medical science as it is for the period of 100 year or more since the completion in 1908.

Until the current Daehan Medical Center has been existed…

In Joseon Dynasty, at the end of 19th century when the modern medical science of the West had been introduced to Korea in accordance with the flow of the opening of a port, ‘Jejungwon (濟衆院;Widespread Relief House)’ which was the Korean first modern hospital that Emperor ‘Gojong’ established at Jae-dong of Seoul in 1885 according to the suggestion of Dr. H. N. Allen who was an American missionary doctor, a national hospital ‘Gwangjewon’ established for the purpose of curing nation’s diseases in 1899 and ‘Daehanguk Red Cross Hospital(대한국적십자병원:영문이 별도로 없습니다)’ established in 1905 for the purpose of increase of nation’s health and free treatment for the poor were keeping the tradition of modern medical science. Following that, Daehan Medical Center which became the beginning of a modern general hospital was opened in 1907 passing a year after the government of the Residency-General of Japan.

Hirobumi Ito who was the residency-general at that time in 1906 emphasized to build a large-scaled modern hospital saying that “Joseon has some medical centers, but they are small and the facilities are poor”. Such his opinion lasted to the official announcement of the Daehan Medical Center law in 1907. So, Daehan Medical Center was established under the direct control of Uijeongbu based on the unification of ‘Gwangjewon’, ‘Daehanguk Red Cross Hospital’, ‘Hospital in affiliation of Medical School(의학교부속병원영문이 별도로 없습니다)’, etc.
Daehan Medical Center was built all over a peak ‘Madubong(馬頭峰)’, by the way, originally this was the site of ‘Hamchunwon(含春苑)’ which was a royal garden in Joseon Dynasty and was titled ‘Gyeongmogung(景慕宮)’ which had been used as a shrine keeping the ancestral tablet of ‘Sadoseja(思悼世子)’ who was the father of King ‘Jeongjo’ after his enthronement. The construction to build Daehan Medical Center which was a modern hospital at that time was started in September of 1906 and the main building was completed in November of 1907. The name of Daehan Medical Center was changed as the Japanese Government General of Korea Hospital(朝鮮總督府醫院)조선총독부의원:영문이 별도로 없습니다) under Japanese Colonial Rule since Korea-Japan Annexation, and it became a hospital in affiliation of the department of medical science after being incorporated into Keijō Imperial University(京城帝國大學) in 1926. Daehan Medical Center has been used as Seoul National University Hospital since Korean independence in 1945 up to now. Currently, the main building of the former Daehan Medical Center is studying the historical evidences of Korean medical science by being used as a medical science museum of Seoul National University displaying the flow of Korean modernㆍcontemporary history.
Daehan Medical Center opening the gate of medical modernization

In those days, Daehan Medical Center was a modern general hospital which was classified into technical departments such as internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, otorhinolaryngology, dermatology, dental surgery and etc. and developed as a training organization of a general medical team by establishing additionally and newly the pharmaceutical department, the department of a maternity nurse, clinical pathology and so on after conducting 4-year-course technical medical education. For this, a professor Heung-Ki Lee working at a laboratory of hospital history, hospital history cultural center in Seoul National University Hospital said “we should not forget that Daehan Medical Center was the result of Japanese medical colonialism to make Joseon Japanese colony, but also it did not started from nothing but developed based on the medical modernization and the outcome of medical development promoted by Emperor ‘Gojong’ and Joseon government”.

It’s true that Daehan Medical Center is evaluated as the first outcome of Japanese medical colonialism policy by some. However, the main building of the former Daehan Medical Center is the unique building reflecting the history of medical modernization of the Greater Korean Empire(大韓帝國) under Japanese colonial government at this current time that ‘Jejungwon’ or ‘Daehan Red Cross Hospital’ exist only on a photo. Even today, the minute hand of a clock tower standing on the main building of the former Daehan Medical Center is quietly passing a time in the flow of time named the medical modernization of republic of Korea.
