Cultural Landscape Analysıs And Assesment Of Beykoz, Polonezköy

Cultural Landscape’ is the term that can be seen in anywhere, where human and land reactions are, and changable according to the different zones of lands and to the community who leave on it. Cultural landscapes can be understood with its natural and visual aspects and defined with its geographical boundaries. While many variaties of cultural landscapes can be coincided all over the world; the cultural developments, creativenesses and cultural richnesses of communites can be read by their land uses and those, all compose the identity of the geography of the land. The term of cultural landscape must be understood and protected by the societies who have such areas on their own lands and must be recovered for the future generations.

The biggest aim of this project is to put the detailed definitions of cultural landscape clearly; the definition of cultural landscape, the history of cultural landscape, the typologies of cultural landscape, and the cautions for protection of the cultural landscapes have been discussed; in addition to those the literatures based on the techniques of analyses of the lands who were defined as cultural landscapes have been studied. To understand the all outcomes of the research, to study an area as a model and to applicate the techniques that have been quested; Polonezkoy which is a little village in Beykoz, Istanbul has been choosen as the research field.

Since the first day of Polonezkoy as a colonie has started; today it continues its life in a dense forest as a village; which is declared as ‘Natural Protection Zone’. The features in itself, the mixture of cultures of Polis’h and Turk’s, that it has; shape the structure of the village and the problems, the suggestions and the strategies of today, for protection are the reasons for this very important selection of this place as a model for further assesments of similar zones.

For protecting Polonezkoy with its natural and cultural heritages, to save the datas which were collected on the land surveys to make the village live in the next centuries; assesment of the village’s cultural landscape features have been decided as convinient.

The content of this thesis encloses; analyse the changes that village has lived through in time, the effects of these changes and the usages of today’s life, the expectations of society, and the future predictions and cautions according to the surveys of the land with the aim of to convey to society ‘the awareness’ for cultural landscapes.

With the acceptance of Cultural Landscape as a consept; after making literature researches, a cultural landscape approach is defined for Polonezkoy. After studying both, on the desk and on the land, the inputs of natural and cultural landscape features are gathered to be understood clearly and the village is divided into two landscape character areas.

First landscape character area is defined as ‘The Forest Zone’ and studied with the features which have been made for protection and devolopment of vegetation and wildlife uniquenesses that the village has.

Second landscape character area is defined as ‘Polonese Living Zone’ and divided into subtitles for showing models with their best circumstances and differences that it has in its structure.

Definiton of landscape character areas, expectations of people who have been living in, the demand of people who are active on land uses and the techniques that have been using to live in the village are annotated from past to present. The interviews and differentiations between old and new photos were used as subsources.

The last section of the theses as a result shows suggestions for protecting the cultural structure with its traditions, style of living ways; according to the literature and land surveys have been made.
