| Antioxidant Activities of Phytoestrogens
Free radicals are highly active compounds that are created in the body during normal metabolic functions or introduced from the environment. These compounds contain one or more unpaired electron and are inherently unstable, since they have extra energy. To reduce their energy load, free radicals react with certain cells in the body, interfering with the cells’ ability to function normally and play a role in different health problems, including the aging process, cancer and atherosclerosis.
Antioxidants, on the other hand, are natural molecules that help protect the body from harmful free radicals and these are very important for life. Due to this, most of scientific research is based on antioxidants.
In this our research, we have established the antioxidant activities of phloridzin and phloretin of phytoestrogens which are used in menopausal symptoms, cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, breast and prostate cancers, diabetes and various diseases.
In this study, some tests evaluated of phloridzin and phloretin to find out antioxidant activity. These tests are; reducing power, DPPH radical scavening, ABTS radical scavenging, DMPD radical scavenging activities and Cuprac assay. The results were compared to natural and synthetic antioxidants. It was determined that both phloridzin and phloretin show antioxidant activities in all tests. For reason, these two products could also be used as antioxidants.
