Inhibitors Of Angiotensin Converting Enzyme
Plants and plants extracts are becoming increasingly popular in recent years due to the synthesis of chemical substances which are present in the composition of plants, have less side effects and lower costs compared to synthetic materials. It will be beneficial to investigate these plants scientifically for both positive and negative effects on public health detection.
Enzymes which are naturally available in plants are being used in clinical, industrial and many other areas in our country. Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE); a component of the renin-angiotensin system has an important role in the regulation of blood pressure and cardiovascular system. In this study, ACE inhibitors which were widely used in the treatment of hypertension and congestive heart failure were examined. ACE inhibitory activities of ethyl alcohol and aqueous extracts prepared from 35 plants growing in Turkey and known to be used in the treatment of hypertension and also some chemical substances were determined spectrophotometrically according to the Shalaby method. It was determined that all the extracts and chemical substances used in our study showed ACE inhibitory effect. The results showed that % inhibition values of plant extracts and chemical substances on the ACE were increased with the increasing concentration.
It can be suggested that several plant species which are potential sources of ACE inhibitors may be appropriate to be used as an additional support to drug treatment in patients with hypertension.
