Characterization of scrap polyethylene and effects of recycling on product properties.

In this study, reusability of scraps generated from high density polyethylene pipe production by extrusion and recycled polyethylenes supplied from market, in the same production was investigated.

Two groups of studies with laboratory and industrial-scale extruders were carried out. Pure and recycled polyethylenes were blended by mixing with various ratios in a laboratory-type extruder. In order to increase the thermal resistance of recycled polyethylene in the preparation of blends and reduce degradation during the process, two different heat stabilizers were added to formulations in different ratios in some of the experiments, and their effects on products were investigated. The various properties of pure polyethylene, recycled polyethylenes and blended products were comparetively examined. In addition, plastic pipe samples were manufactured in an industrial-scale extruder by mixing different types of recycled polyethylene with virgin polyethylene in different ratios. Various features of the produced pipes were also analyzed and compared.

In order to the characterization of raw materials and products, flow, thermal, structural and mechanical properties were analyzed by Melt Flow Rate (MFR), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Universal Tensile Test respectively.
