Synthesis And Investigation Of Surface Coating Materials Based On Polycyanurate

Functional surface coating materials provide not only well appearance but also protect against environmental conditions. Since they also offer superior properties to the surface, the functional surface coating materials are used in electronic, aviation and defence industry etc. In the recent years it is expected that the surface coating materials should provide superior physical and chemical properties for technological applications as well as improving the surface properties. In this study, the preparation and characterization of polycyanurate films which were prepared at different conditions with high thermal and mechanical stability and dielectrical properties were carried out.

In thesis studies, the preparation and physical/chemical characterization of polycyanurates were synthesized from bisphenol E dicyanate ester by cyclotrimerization reaction in the presence of catalysts such as Al(OH)3, ZnCl2, FeCl3, phenol or free catalyst followed by thermal curing. The chemical structures of both bulk and film form of thermoset polycyanurate products were analysed by FTIR and the fractional conversions were calculated from the FTIR graphs. Furthermore, thermal stability, dielectrical properties, surface contact angle and physical properties such as hardness and adhesion and chemical stabilities in different solvents of the obtained polycyanurate films were investigated.

The fractional conversion value of products prepared in the presence of catalyst reached to 87 % while the conversion value of free catalyst polycyanurate films was 60 %. In the case of catalyst using, the prepared films have lower thermal stabilities than that of the products without catalyst. Also the thermal stabilities of the samples decrease with increasing amount of catalyst. The dielectric constants of the functional polycyanurate films were found to be at around 2,7─5,41 in a wide frequency range. Moreover, it is found that the dielectrical breakdown strength of most of the prepared films were more than 100 kV/mm independent of catalyst type used. These dielectrical characterizational results showed that the prepared polycyanurated based films can be used in microelectronic industry as a surface coating material. In addition, it is observed that the surface contact angle of polycyanurate of the films decreased to 70o while this value was 85-95o for the bulk form of polycyanurate product. On the other hand, the hardnesses of prepared films were found to be at a round 160-170 rocker, lower than that of reference glass, and all films had superior adhesion properties to the surface.
