Determınatıon Of The Metal Content Of Partıculate Matter In Dıfferent Sıze In Istanbul Atmosphere

Effects of respirable particulate matter (PM10) on human health, depends on the exposure time, and physical and chemical characteristics of the particulate matter. Biological effects of the particular matter which disrupts human health today is could not have been defined yet. Heavy metals can neither be perished nor destroyed and besides, they can be toxic in high concentrations in the human body. Therefore, determination of the toxicity of PM chemical characterization and the effects on human health is of great importance in the description.

This paper presents findings related to metal concentrations of particulate matter in the atmosphere in the city of Istanbul. Between the dates July 2008 - August 2010 in Istanbul, in 5 specified points (Kilyos, Rasathane, Göztepe, Beşiktaş and Avcılar) there has been made a total of 80 pieces of PM sampling. Cascade Impector PM sampler with PM samples from eight different sizes (<0,43 μm, 0,43-1,0 μm, 1,0-1,7 μm, 1,7-2,6 μm, 2,6-3,5 μm, 3,5-5,2 μm, 5,2-6,5 μm, and 6,5-8,0 μm >8,0 μm) were collected. Examples of the mass concentration determined after solubilization Zn, Fe, Cr, Co, Ni, Pb, Cu, Cd, As, Mn, and V, contents were determined.

SPM (Suspended Particulate Matter) is including concentration of the highest in Göztepe, and the lowest in Kilyos, as follows respectively; Kilyos: 16,8±5,1 ng/m3; Rasathane: 21,5±9,1 ng/m3; Avcılar: 28,6±13,6 ng/m3; Beşiktaş: 34,8±11,6 ng/m3; Göztepe: 48,6±34,0 ng/m3. SPM analyzed the content of metal concentrations of Cu, Mn, As and Fe's highest were detected in winter (24,6 ±1,2 ng/m3, 18,2±0,7 ng/m3, 3,7±0,7 ng/m3, 1611±66,7 ng/m3) in Göztepe; Ni (5,1±0,2 ng/m3), Pb (17,7±2,3 ng/m3), Cd (1,04±0,03 ng/m3) in Avcılar. In summer seasons, V (3,6 ± 0,2 ng/m3) and Zn (225,9 ± 7,7 ng/m3), while have the highest values in Beşiktaş; As (7,8 ± 0,12 ng/m3) has the highest value in Göztepe. Metals that determined in Avcılar station, was 2 to 4 times higher than determined values of Kilyos which had been selected as the ‘backround city’. Ratio of the Pb concentration in thin dusts (<2,6 μm) were taken high values such as 67% to 76% at the outside stations of Kilyos.
