STUDIES On HEALING PLANTS And HEALING GARDEN DESIGN

Healing plants have been used in the treatment of various diseases since the beginning of mankind’s history. While these plants are still used as traditional medicine today, their actual use and active ingredients are scientifically analyzed and people consume them increasingly consciously.

Healing plants include different forms of plant groups, such as herbaceous plants, shrubs, and trees. Many herbaceous plants, shrubs, and trees that grow naturally and also used in gardening and landscaping are actually used to cure certain diseases by applying different methods (crimping, decoction, brewing, oil, ointment, tincture, syrup, poultice) to their vegetative organs (leaves, seeds, fruit, flower, crust, root, rhizome, tuber, etc.).

Spending time in gardens has been proved to have positive effects on psychology and physiology by recent scientific research. Taking certain measures, people use various exotic plants in gardening arrangement, as well as the plants that grow naturally in Turkey. Thanks to the characteristics of climate, soil, and the environmental conditions, there are lots of plant species in İstanbul. These plants vary in color, scent, and form; they are used in food, textile, medical application, and pharmacy sector and studies on landscape architecture. During this research, 264 healing plant have been detected that either grow naturally in İstanbul or can be cultivated taking certain measures. Based on field survey and observations, these detected healing plants are listed in a table. Among all, 45 of them are trees, 42 of them are shrubs, 13 of them are creeping plants, 151 of them are herbaceous plants, and 13 of them are bulbous plants and tuber crops. Some of these have high rates of toxic effect. Some others lead to irritation on the skin in case of physical contact. Still some others have allergen characteristics.

Through works in the literature, a good deal of information on healing plants and healing gardens has been collected. Concepts and definitions on the subject have been explained; important points of founding a healing garden have been specified. Healing plants that can grow in the city of İstanbul have been used in the design of a sample healing garden. This sample garden has been designed to attract some attention to the importance of healing gardens and introduce many plant species that are commonly used in landscape architecture and also have healing characteristics. The concept of healing, which is one of the most important functions of healing gardens and representation of somatic and mental wellbeing is also emphasized.
