Studıes On Scented Plants And Scented Gardens

Scent is one of the most powerful and attracting properties of plants. Scented plants might be seen almost everywhere, but researches and studies on scented plants have been rarely done and they are not commonly used in our country. But nowadays apart from their visual and ecological properties, the scent of plants is used in landscape designing, as well. Scented gardens that have been designed with those plants are arousing interest in society.

The first scented garden in history was seen in the Hanging Gardens of Babylon designed in the 6^th century B.C. Aromatic plants were first used by Egyptian priests and then by Greeks and later they were taken to Europe and finally used in our country.

One of the facts that must be paid attention while designing a scented garden is to prevent the airflow that might occur in the garden. Furthermore, gradation of plants to nose, hand or foot line and placing them next to the walking ways and seats to ensure the users’ contact with plants are required. Most of the scented plants grow better in sunny places.

Both in the world and in our country, scented gardens are generally designed in various parks and gardens, in the parts separated for aromatic plants. In this study examples for scented gardens are given both around the world and from our country.

In this study first of all the literature on scented gardens is reviewed. Types of scented plants that have natural spread in Istanbul or that are grown exotically and might be used in landscape designing are defined by searching through various parks, botanical gardens and arboreta. Among them 43 broad-leaved trees, 15 pine trees, 110 bushes, 23 clutching and climbing plants, 34 perennials, 32 seasonal flowers, 48 herbaceous , 40 bulbous plants, 31 rock plants and 15 water plants that is 391 scented taxa in total have been listed and given in chart.

The definition and the properties of scent that gives a different dimension and effect to the garden and still generally shadowed by the visual properties are given and examples to scented gardens around the world and from our country are represented by conveying the principles that must be followed during the historical process and the designing of scented gardens. Istanbul has been chosen as the research area and an office garden with 2500 sqm. lot in Darıca/ Kocaeli is designed as a “Scented Garden” and presented as the pilot project.
