Aminolysis of Waste Poly(ethylene terephthalate) And Characterization of Aminolysis Products

In this study, poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) wastes obtained from grinding of post-consumer water bottles sieved to obtain a 4-8 mesh fraction were depolymerized with different molar ratios of diethylamine (DEA) or triethanolamine (TEtA), in the presence and absence of xylene and with zinc acetate (ZnAc) as catalyst under high pressure and temperature. After intermediate products obtained from depolymerization were exracted with boiling water, water insoluble fraction (SÇ-) was obtained. The filtrate was cooled and crystallized and water soluble fraction (SÇ+) was obtained. Amine, acid and hydroxyl values of the obtained aminolysis intermediate products were determined according to standard values. The structural properties of intermediate products were analyzed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and the thermal properties were analyzed by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). Besides, aminolysis intermediate products were used in the synthesis of alkyd resins. Alkyd films were prepared from alkyd resins obtained from aminolysis intermediate products. The physical and chemical properties of those alkyd films were investigated.

During this study, aminolysis of PET under high pressure has been conducted for the first time in literature and intermediate products with amine, acid and hydroxyl end groups were obtained by the depolymerization of PET. PET high pressure aminolysis products were compared with the products obtained from glycolysis, hydrolysis and aminoglycolysis reactions. Moreover, it is observed that high pressure aminolysis products are suitable for alkyd resin production and alkyd films prepared from alkyd resins show perfect physical and chemical film properties.
