Modellıng Of Coalıfıcatıon And Hydrocarbon Generatıon In Soma Coal Basın

Soma coal basin in Western Anatolia is one of the lignite coal fields of Turkey. There are three lignite seams (Lower, Middle and Upper) in the Soma coalfield and with in the frame of study the Lower coal interval will be investigated. For this study, coal samples were collected from selected wells, drilled for stratigraphic purposes. Computer-aided modeling of the basin evolution is a major part of the study, which aims the determination of coalbed gas potential of the Soma Basin.

Within the frame of a multi-disciplinary project, launched in 2009, modeling of coalification of KM2 coals and of its temporal development is also aimed, using the data obtained from these wells. For this purpose, recently drilled eight wells (E-311, E-314, E-315, E-319, E-320, E-321, E-330, E-333) are modeled using the PetroMod 1-D basin modeling software. Two representative sections, striking NE-SW (one section) and NW-SE (two sections) are also modeled using the PetroMod 2-D basin modeling software. In accordance with the general flow chart of modeling studies, first a conceptual model of the geological evolution of the basin is constructed. In the light of the generalized stratigraphy of the basin and of the regional geology, for the time period starting from the onset of deposition of the Neogene sequence (18.5 Ma ago) upto the Present, 11 separate events are described. Nine of these events are depositional and two of them erosional. Erosional events are related to the unconformities between the Soma and the Deniş Formations and at the top of the volcaniclastic unit. Depositional events are represented from the oldest to youngest, by the M1-KM2-M2-M3-KM3-P1-KP1-P2ab-P2c-P3 and Pltv units. In the context of the construction of the conceptual model for each event, a number of parameters (lithology, age, paleo-bathymetry, paleo-heat flux and paleo sediment/water interface temperature) are defined to create the first input data. For the calibration of the conceptual model vitrinite reflectance values, measured in coal samples taken from wells, are used. Hereby, as reflectance trend at each well was limited to a relatively short depth interval, trends of all the modeled wells together were used, in order to ensure a more reliable calibration. During the calibration of the conceptual model, temporal changes of the heat flux values and the thicknesses of the eroded units during the last two million years, are optimized and finalized, in the light of the geological and structural evolution of the region. 1-D modeling of eight wells and 2-D modeling of three sections has been completed using the input data, prepared in the light of the finalized conceptual model. Modeling results showed, that the period of maximum burial during 5 to 2 Mabp and accordingly the original thickness of the unit Pltv, deposited during this period and was partly eroded subsequently, are the most critical parameters for the coalification of coal seam KM2.

With a new modeling study using data from seismic studies, conducted in the context of the ongoing multi-disciplinary project, it will be now possible to predict the coalification degree of KM2 coals in the southern part of the basin, where the coals are located much deeper ,but borehole control does not yet exist.
