Investıgatıon Of The Pb(2+) Removal From Wastewaters By Weak Acıdıc Catıon Exchanger Resın

In this study, lead (Pb2+) removal from synthetic wastewater by weak acidic ion exchange resin was investigated. The study was composed of three sections. In the first section, effects of different initial lead concentrations (C0), pH, temperature (T), time (t) and ion exchange resin amounts (m) were examined. The optimum conditions were determined as pH=5, t=360 min., m = 0.05 g for lead removal. Ion exchange mechanism at various conditions were observed using isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic models. The better correlation was found as Koble-Corrigan isotherm model. Effects of temperature and initial lead concentration on the reaction and diffusion kinetics were modelled separately. The higher R2 (0.991–0.9998), lower % ε (1.2–4.2) and closer values of qexp and qcal showed that the data fitted well with pseudo second order model among the reaction based kinetic models. The intraparticle diffusion, and pore and surface mass diffusion models were determined as the most suitable diffusion models in the investigation of initial lead concentration and temperature effects, respectively. In the second section of study, column studies with different flow rates and regeneration studies were performed. It was reached to breakthrough point at 35033 BV and 23805 BV for the flow rate of 3 m/h and 5 m/h, respectively. The capacity loss was found as approximately 28% for both flow rates. In the third section of the study, FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared) spectra and ESEM (Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy) images were used to determine the interaction between the ion exchange resin and Pb(2+) ions, and to investigation of microsurface of the resins, respectively. Finally, it can be concluded that ion exchange process with weak acidic ion exchangers is technically feasible for lead removal especially at low concentrations. Column studies revealed that weak acidic ion exchangers can be used after regeneration repeatedly with low capacity losses.
