Slope Stability Analysis Using The Finite Elements And Limit Equilibrium Methods

Slope stability is one of the major design issues in geotechnical engineering. The main point in the analysis of a slope failure is to determine the critical slip surface. Limit equilibrium method is widely used for this purpose. The lowest safety factor obtained from the analysis is used to determine the degree of safety from the collapse of the slope.

The limit equilibrium method is an easy tool to determine the safety of a slope by means of estimating the factor of safety. However, all the equilibrium conditions are not always satisfied and the real field stress conditions are not obtained in a limit equilibrium design. Strength Reduction Method (SRM) is commonly used for a couple of decade to overcome the disadvantages of limit equilibrium method. SRM calculations are carried out as the strength parameters of the soil layer are gradually reduced until the slope reaches up to failure.

In this study, SRM technique was used with finite element software Plaxis to estimate the critical slip surface of a slope. Limit equilibrium analyses were also with the SLOPE/W software. The details of the SRM technique were discussed using the Plaxis results on Mohr circles. The geometry and the location of the critical slip surface obtained from the limit equilibrium analyses and the SRM are identical for the case without piles. For the case with piles, different slip surface geometry was obtained. For the case with piles, the shear strains were widened over a larger area after the pile whereas the critical slip was almost like a radial surface in the case of without piles. The factor of safety was increased in the case of piles. The effect of the pile location was also investigated by carrying out comprehensive analyses for both, one row and two rows of pile groups.
