Tooth Color Determination By Electronic Systems
Tooth shade determination in aesthetical dentistry, can be done by 2 ways; visual and instrumental. Visual determination depending the dentist’s subjective comment, causes significant variations. Metamerism, illumination, type of illumination (tungsten of fluorescent bulbs), color illusion and color sensation are some factors on this incoherency. Researchs for more consistent methods has started, when deficiencies are found out with the traditional shade determination. Objective shade determination standarts are needed to prevent time and production waste caused by repeated clinics due to mistakes. To solve this problem, developments as spectrophotometers and colorimeters have been used in many researchs but not in routine clinic usage. Practical usage difficulties due to their sensitivies and high costs have required alternative researchs. Therefore, we developed a system as an alternative for existing shade determination systems. In this system, we considered two methods, as real time and stil image processing on frames that have been taken from a camera plugged to the computer. Basicly in these methods, frames have been processed by median filtering and converting to HSV color space to minimize suffers from illumination variations. Then, obtained average hue and saturation values have been compared to reference values that have been recorded on the calibration session.
