Development Of The Female Reproductive System In The Freshwater Crayfısh (Astacus Leptodactylus Leptodactylus, Eschscholtz, 1823)

The aim of this study is to investigate the development of the female reproductive system of Astacus leptodatylus leptodatylus (Eschscholtz, 1823) by defining the morphological changes in size, colour, shape of the ovary and the histological changes revealed by inspecting the different cellular types of oocytes that have various size, shape, content and portions under light microscopy from the initial differentiation, up to its final maturation of the ovary. Specimen were collected from designated areas in Terkos Lake between June 2009-April 2010. The ovaries which were obtained from dissection of the speciemen prepared for light microscopic examinations and embeded in parafin. Serial sections 5-6 µm

thick were stained with histological dyes. These sections were examined considering the ovarian stucture, size and the cell types contained and the developmental stages of the female reproductice system were identified.

The trilobed and Y-shaped ovary consisting two anterior and one posterior lobes is located in the cephalotorax and lies dorsal to the hepatopancreas and ventral side of the heart. The outermost layer of the ovary is consisted of a single layer of thin epitelium and a connective tissue beneath it. Longitudinally and annulary located kollagen fibers are present in the connective tissue and just under it lies a single layer of follicle cells that begins to surround the oocytes. The oviducts extend laterally from the middle part of the ovary and connect with the gonopores located on the bases of the third pair of walking legs and the eggs released with this way. Four main stages of development of the ovary is observed. The ovary has different size, shape and colour and also contains various types of oocytes at each stage. Different histological stains were used in order to identify the contents of oocytes and their sizes are measured. And so the developmental stages are determined.

In our study, which is an original one, the developmental stages are identified by revealing the histological stucture of the ovary at light microscopy level and so the development of the female reproductive system is established.
