Abstract The automobile plays a significant role in the daily life of a Malaysian, and this has spurred automotive companies to look for an edge wherever they can find it in order to keep up with the competitive pressures of satisfying consumers. More often than not, factors such as branding and price of the automobiles would be the dominant factors that affect the purchase decisions of consumers when it comes to buying a Japanese car in Malaysia. However, this proposition requires further substantiation alongside other variables such as ergonomic features, innovation and recreation awareness. Hence, this study aims to determine the relationship between those variables and consumer decision-making with regard to the purchase of Japanese automobiles. To facilitate this objective, researchers collected a total of 150 usable survey responses and analysed them using reliability, correlations and multiple regression analyses. It was found that 23.9% of variance in consumer decision-making was significantly explained by brand name, ergonomic features and innovation. Price and recreational consciousness was found to insignificantly affect Malaysian consumer decision-making in purchasing Japanese automobiles. This finding was perhaps due to consumers being price cautious during times of uncertainty and rising cost of living.

Abstract The advent of globalisation and urbanisation has caused city populations to grow larger and faster by the day. As these populations grow, so do the populations of domestic cats. Problems related to free-roaming stray cats are becoming increasingly important due to factors such as animal-welfare, public health issues and various societal impacts. Though it may be true that there are many means to resolve this problem, it is crucial that this problem be resolved in the most sustainable, cost-effective and humane way possible. This study posits that the current methods to control the stray cat population are ineffective and hence proposes a more innovative and humane design in order to trap stray cats. The TRIZ methodology was used in this study. The common cat trap design was studied using function analysis and cause-and-effect chain analysis. A few engineering contradictions were formulated. An innovative way to capture cats was proposed by resolving these contradictions using a few selected inventive principles, namely segmentation, asymmetry, beforehand cushioning, equipotentiality and dynamisation. This innovative cat trap was also proven to be feasible and affordable, with an estimated cost of MYR 80. The cat trap is expected to catch a maximum of 4 cats. Overall, the proposed trap is sustainable, cost-effective and humane, and indeed addresses the issue as an effective method in controlling the stray cat population.

Abstract Preservation techniques assures the safety, stability, cleanliness and nutrition of products. An effective preservation technique includes vacuum packaging. However, issues pertaining to the difficulty of opening these vacuum sealed packages do exist, sometimes severely to a point where it causes wrap rage or package rage, which is a usual term for being frustrated when opening hard-to-open packages. Various injuries have also been reported concerning individuals who attempt to open these vacuum sealed packages. These packages also pose a threat to the environment as they are thrown away and mostly end up in landfills. A solution could lie in the design of an appropriate vacuum package sealing machine that addresses these issues. Thus, this study aims to innovate and design a multifunctional vacuum package sealing machine using TRIZ techniques. Several function models were investigated along with the cause and effect chain analysis, upon which 3 major engineering contradictions were established. These contradictions were resolved with the recommendation of 3 inventive principles, namely local quality, taking out and universality. Finally, researchers proposed a zip lock sealing machine with a zip lock sealing feature (local quality), tear notch (taking out) and 4-in-1 process (universality) which unifies the alignment, zip sealing, cooling and cutting process. The new design’s impact reflects on enhancement on numerous characteristics associated with human limitation, safety and health, as well as environmental issues.

Abstract Devices such as walking frames can sometimes cause secondary injuries to patients if not used properly. Although there are existing redesigned walking frames which prevent falls from happening, it appears that there is still room for improvement towards developing a more innovative and ergonomic walker. Hence, this study aims to design and develop an innovative walking frame for improved usability using ARIZ. ARIZ, which is an algorithm for inventive problem solving, is widely used for complex problem solving with minimal changes to the system. The ARIZ approach in this study proposed three inventive principles to be used, namely dynamicity, asymmetry and nested doll. The solution involved a double slider crank mechanism which enabled the newly designed walking frame to effectively support gait movement and stair-climbing. Overall, researchers of this study successfully designed and developed a unique and innovative ergonomic walking frame for the elderly and disabled people with intentions to prevent further injuries or accidents.

Abstract: ntibiotics are well known to be medicine to many types of disease since their introduction into modern medicine in 1941. However, their effectiveness have reduced from day to day due to the emergence and dissemination of resistance among bacterial pathogens. Strains with resistance to multiple antibiotics have emerged among major Gram-positive and Gram-negative species, including Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter spp., Enterobacteriaceae, and Neisseria gonorrhoaeae. This issue has resulted as a problem in new drug development with little support of evidence. To address this issue, it requires both conservation and innovation. Conservation includes making the best use of current antibiotic effectiveness by reducing demand through vaccination, infection control, diagnostics, public education, incentives for clinicians to prescribe fewer antibiotics, and restrictions on access to newer. While innovation includes improving the efficacy of current drugs and replenishing effectiveness by developing new drugs. This paper review the occurence and treatment of antibiotics and antibiotics resistance in wastewater treatment plants around the world, including Malaysia.

Abstract: As far as the soil properties are concerned, slope failure is not necessarily related to the shear strength alone, other properties such as the liquid limit and dry density in particular are useful indicators in determining the cause for slope failure. In this study, soil samples were collected from the failed slope and the neighboring stable slope at KM13.2 LATAR Expressway, Selangor Peninsular Malaysia. The objective of the study was to determine the cause of failure through analysis of the soil moisture parameters not only by comparing test results of both of the samples but also by comparing them against established criteria from previous studies. Evaluation of the test results has revealed that the slope may have failed due to low liquid limit after checking against criteria of Denisov and also due to low shear strength parameters, particularly the internal friction angle after checking against the established criteria from previous researches. However, evaluation on the maximum dry density of the failed slope sample has revealed that it is in fact a suitable slope material after checking the results against established criteria thus the slope has failed not due to low maximum dry density.

Abstract: Key performance requirements for brake pads include frictional stability and wear resistance. There were methods used for testing and one of the requirements include vehicle performance test. In this study, vehicle evaluation test was done on two brands of brake pads available in Malaysian market. The commercialized brake pads selected are fit for selected model vehicle, sold at low price and do not contain any approval information from any regulations. The sample were tested for cold performance testing, speed sensitivity testing, wear and micro structural analysis to identify the braking performance. The results were then compared with OEM brake pad composition. Both brake pads surpass the minimum regulations of UN R 90, with sample R1 exhibits closer performance with OEM compare to R2, but demonstrates higher wear loss. The results in this study provide useful indications on the safety level of brake pads sold in Malaysian market.

Real Throughput Measurements Comparison between Unoptimized and Optimized Network Cards
Okta Nurika, Mohd Fadzil Hassan, Nordin Zakaria
Department of Computer and Information Sciences, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS
Abstract: This paper is an expansion of our previous publication about simultaneous multiple network cards optimization in a data centre simulation, using genetic algorithm (GA). The generated optimal solutions from our simulations, which represent optimal settings for multiple network cards need to be tested in the real hardware environment. Each optimal network card setting is meant for different data transmission characteristic. In a real network environment, we streamed every optimal network card setting with their respective data transmission and recorded the throughput rate, and then compared it against the throughput from the network card's default setting (unoptimized). The comparison results infer that all of our optimal network card settings provide higher throughput than the default setting. Furthermore, our optimal settings exhibit capability to prevent the CPU from crashing, as a result from being overwhelmed by the stream of packets. This effect comes from the optimal settings' ability to minimize kernel interrupt generation, hence the CPU cycles can be preserved. The preservation of CPU cycles leads to lower heat generation and lower power consumption, which is economically beneficial for the data centre itself.
