A US patrol hit with small arms fire and it returned to its Shkin base. On Saturday (the 28th), 12 persons ambushed another patrol ne of Shkin and Apache helicopters were called-in. On Sat-Sunday, US bases in both Orgun-e and Gardez were hit with rockets.

Zabul was last Taliban stronghold in early 2002. On June 22nd, Taliban captured Atghar district. Fighting has raged since. Zabul governor, Tokhi, said 2 Taliban commanders killed. In another battle, 50 Talibs ambushed gov't vehicles, one Talib and 3 troops killed.

Remote-controlled bomb

A bomb explodes near pulpit of mosque during prayer time, injuring 24 people. The mosque was @ Mullah Abdullah Fayaz, who had chastised the Taliban for betraying Islam. Fayaz is an avowed close ally of Karzai and headed Kandahar's ulema. Two days later, July 2nd, another mullah, Maulvii Hamd-ullah, is gunned-down in front of his mosque.
