CAMEROON

Laurent Heberle (Obernai branch) b 1907 Albe France, was a Catholic missionary in Cameroon 1934-59. He wrote a book under the name of J. Gilles Heberle, about the Catholic missions in the Cameroon, which was published in 1960. Father Héberlé supported the independence movement. However, along with 2 other priests, he became a victim of the violence which accompanied the independence movement. On November 29, 1959 the mission station at Banka Banfang was attacked. Father Héberlé was killed.

Carl August Hermann (Herman) Heberle b 1846 CZ and d 1918 Broken Hill. He m Kitty Gregor (b 1847, d 1933 Broken Hill). Children: Charles (b 1866), Maria C (b 1867), Charles (b 1872), Kitty (b 1874), Herman Frederick (b 1876), Thomas George (b 1879), Kitty (b 1882), Emily (b 1884), William C (b 1886), Georgina (b 1889). They lived in mining areas near Adelaide until settling in Broken Hill in 1886. Herman was superintendent of the Cambrian Silver Mine 1886-87 and managed Silver Ring Mine 1887-90 in Broken Hill. Foundation member and in 1892 he was elected president of the Amalgamated Miners Association (union) at Broken Hill. He was one of 7 union leaders jailed for inciting workers to strike. Released 14.3.1893. Family went to West Australia for a few years after this. He worked in or managed mines in the Coolgardie and Bardoc areas. Returned to Broken Hill in 1899 and continued to work in the mines. Prospected for gold in the Bendigo district Victoria in early 1860s. Lived in Burra in 1865-67 and in Moonta 1872-84.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA (SA) STATE

About 85% of the Australian Heberles are descendants of August Friedrich Heberle, a miner from Clausthal-Zellerfeld, who arrived in Adelaide, with his wife Caroline and 5 children in 1851. The family settled initially in a mining area east of Adelaide, near Mt Barker. They moved to the Burra mining area (Kooringa-Redruth) in the mid 1850s and to Moonta in the late 1860s. Most of the family moved to Broken Hill NSW in 1886 and some moved to West Australia and Victoria, or back to South Australia, mainly in the 1890s.

Frederick was a miner at Moonta SA until c1885 and then lived in Melbourne.

Geoffrey Harry Heberle b Melbourne. He m Marion Bird 1936. She d 1960 Myrtleford. Children: John Harry, Shirley Edith, Lynette and Alan Sheppard, all born in Wangaratta Vic. He worked on farms in the Cohuna-Shepparton region as a youth and in furniture sales. Served in army in New Guinea. After war, set up furniture store in Myrtleford. Played lawn bowls; was a State player. Married Belle Gowling 1964. Lived in Myrtleford 2005.


John Harry (Jack) Heberle b 1937 Wangaratta Vic, d 1994. Jack m Jocelyn Emo in Montreal Canada. Jocelyn was a primary school teacher. Children: Susan Marion and Christopher John. Jack worked as a carpet and lino layer. He lived in Wangaratta until settling in Myrtleford in 1961. He started his own floorcovering business, which was later combined with his father's furniture store. He built many of the lodges and buildings at Falls Creek and apartments and homes in Myrtleford and Mt Beauty. Had a long involvement with skiing and Falls Creek, as head of the Ski Patrol for many years. Involved in promoting the ski industry and tourism for Falls Creek and Mount Beauty. Lived at Falls Creek and Myrtleford in winter, Mt Beauty in summer. Jack Heberle has a Rotary Park named after him. It is beside the West Kiewa River on Embankment Drive, Mt Beauty. The Jack Heberle Race Hut is in the Nordic Bowl.
Shirley Edith Heberle b Wangaratta. She m John Davis c1962. In 1996 she lived in Hampton Vic.
Lynette Heberle b Wangaratta. She m Bruce Turner in c1961. After his death in c1981, she m Kevin Williams. In 1995 she lived in Wooragee near Beechworth Vic.
Alan Sheppard Heberle b Wangaratta. He m Kaye Goff in 1971. Kaye worked as a secretary. Their children are Trudy L, Darren P and Brooke R. Alan worked in Melbourne as an accountant. He returned to Myrtleford in 1966. He worked in the family furniture and floor covering business 1966-80 and then for a transport company in Myrtleford. He has been a Shire councillor.

Susan Marion Heberle b Myrtleford. Completed Bachelor of Education in Art and Craft. Worked as secondary art, craft, and graphics teacher Bendigo; Mt Beauty. Has lived with partner Peter Cooper since 1985 on tobacco farm at Tawonga and dairy farm in Waaia Vic. Works as replacement teacher. Children: Zachery Aiden, b Clayton Vic and Eiran James, b Mt Beauty Vic.


Christopher John Heberle b Myrtleford. After graduating from Mt Beauty High School in 1982, he attended Melbourne University 1984-85 and Australian National University Canberra 1986-88, graduating with a PhD in computer science. Having already attained Australian National Champion for 9 consecutive years, his sporting career was on an international scale spending northern winters competing on the International cross country circuit. He was a member of Australian skiing teams 1983-92 as cross-country skier. He competed at the World Championships, World Cup and Olympic Games and attained the best-ever Olympic result for an Australian in cross country skiing at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. Was a team member at Albertville France 1992. Member of the Australian junior alpine ski team 1981/82&1982/83. Skied for Australia at 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary Canada. In 1993-94 he was editor of Australian Cross Country News. He works in computers. Has lived in Tawonga South (Mt Beauty) Vic. Director of Intouch Technology. Since 1993 Intouch Technology has been the business partner for the supply and installation of ticketing systems for ski resorts in Australia. Co-founder and co-author of the Intouch system, Chris leads the software development team.

Grant Anthony Heberle b 1955 Katanning. He d 1975 in a motor cycle accident in Queensland. Educated in Albany. He went professional fishing in 1973, worked at a fish and vegetable cannery 1973 and for water authority in Albany 1974.
Patricia Robin (Trish) Heberle b Albany. She worked for library services in WA. Education Dept 1977-83. Represented State of WA in hockey between 1978-87 and Australia 1982-87 including Los Angeles Olympics 1984. Had various jobs 1984-87 in Perth including Laurie Potters Health Club and banking. Lived in Adelaide SA 1987-97. Worked for Australian Womens Hockey Association in SA 1991-97. Returned to Perth 1997-2000 to work for Australian Institute of Sport, womens hockey. Coach of Great Britain and England womens hockey team February 2001-July 2004, achieving with England a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, 5th at the World Cup and the Sport England Coach of the Year Award in 2002. Moved to Geraldton 1974 working as a butcher and insurance representative in 1977-78. Lives in Geraldton. Wife Marilyn worked for Telecom for 19 years in Geraldton. She worked part time as shop assistant in Geraldton. Also worked at St Francis Catholic School Geraldton, as teachers aide.

Norman Alfred Heberle b 1919 Perth. He d 1990 Gnowangerup. Norm m Violet Quartermaine. Children: Ian John, Ross William, Kevin Alfred, Alana. Norm went to school in Leederville (Perth) until 1933. He worked for clothes providers in 1934. He lived in Katanning from 1936. He was in the army 1939-46, fisherman 1946, cook 1947, with Mobil Oil 1947-57, then manager of Katanning club. He went professional fishing with brother Ron in 1972. He moved to Gnowangerup in 1974, worked on farms and WA Government Railways. Violet Quartermaine was the eldest daughter of Walter and Jessie (nee Treloar) Quartermaine. She was b 1920 and d 1991 in Gnowangerup. She was good at sport, being club champion golfer at Forrest Hill Katanning 16 years in a row c1959-74 and champion some 8 times at Gnowangerup. She won club championships in bowls in Katanning and Gnowangerup. Upper Great Southern of WA. Golf champion 1963. Vi was a cook at Gnowangerup Hospital 1975-85.


Kevin Alfred Heberle b Katanning. Married Maureen 1999 Gnowangerup. Joined ANZ Bank in Katanning 1968. Worked in ANZ bank branches in Albany (1974), Mt Barker, Innaloo, Carnarvon, Leederville, East Perth, Victoria Park WA, then resigned in 1978. Did salmon fishing seasons with Uncle Ron (1979, 81). Managed a clothes shop Gnowangerup for 3 years in mid 1980s. Managed farm supplies company in Gnowangerup 1987-94, then Gnowangerup Smash Repairs, worked in agricultural sales business 1995-. Keen sportsman and clubman. Winner of club championships in tennis, darts, golf and bowls. On board of Gnowangerup Hospital for 8 years, chairperson 1995. Maureen was a coordinator with the Central Great Southern Health Service Board in 2001.

Alexander George Heberle, son of Thomas George and Emily Heberle. He was b 1910 in Broken Hill and d 1968 in WA. He m Eunice Bishop. He worked in mines in Broken Hill and in Kalgoorlie WA c1939-67. Moved to Perth c1968. He was a fitter and turner. Lived in Medina (Perth) WA c1976-85.

Cyril Ernest Heberle b 1925 in Perth and d 2004 in Katanning. He m Margaret Baxter (Peggie) 1948 in Katanning. Their children are Rosalene Ann, Malcolm Leslie, and Jennifer Tareena. Cyril was a fisherman c1940-50. He then worked for carriers in Katanning for about 11 years before buying and operating a carrier business. He sold the carrier business in 1978 and worked for Katanning Shire as caretaker until retiring 1990.


Rosalene Ann Heberle b Katanning WA. Married Norman Morisson in Katanning. Did course in hairdressing, then worked as hairdresser in Katanning. Drives school bus.

August Frederick (August), son of August Friedrich and Caroline Papst Heberle b 1852 SA, d 1925 Perth. He m Eliza Ann Datson (nee Trathen) 1880 in SA. Children: Lilian E (b 1880), Harold Percival (b 1882), Albert S (b 1884), Elsie Ernestine (b 1885), Leslie (b 1889). In 1880-85 August was a bootmaker in Moonta SA. He then lived in Broken Hill NSW until 1898. He was a prospector for gold in the Kalgoorlie area c1898-1910. He had a restaurant in Northam 1898-1905, a farm at Cuballing c1910-15, a hostel/cafe Perth c1922-25 and poultry farm at Beechboro, north of Perth 1915-22. He lived at East Perth in 1925. Eliza Ann Heberle d 1927 aged 77, in Perth WA. She m John Datson 1866. She had 6 children by her first marriage.


Willie Datson Heberle b 1869. He adopted the surname of his stepfather during the Boer War, when living in South Africa, from c1895. He died c1940 in South Africa. He married and had 2 daughters.
Charles Rignold Heberle, son of Albert Henry Charles and Elizabeth, b 1882 SA, d 1965 Perth. Groom and shearer Perth, conveyer at Carnarvon, labourer in 1950 and lived in Nedlands (Perth) WA in 1965.

Cecil Edwin Heberle, son of Albert Henry Charles and Elizabeth, b 1884 SA, d Sydney. Married Assunta Terzi 1905 Perth. He was a butcher in 1905. They divorced and he returned to NSW, where he remarried in 1916. She lived in Fremantle c1909-14 under the names of Rose Heberle and later Julia Heberle. She d c1919 and was buried in Kalgoorlie under the name of Maria Hebble.

Harold Percival (Percy) Heberle b 1883 Moonta SA. He d 1970 Perth. He m Mabel Lawrence (Mollie) 1914 in Victoria, divorced her c1928 and m Jessie Agnes c1930 NSW. Children: Elsie G (b 1915 Manly NSW), Harold Leonard (b 1921 NSW, d 1945). Percy had a barber shop in Northam c1898-1900, worked as a clerk for WA Government Railways in York 1901, was a civil servant 1919, salesman 1921, accountant 1938 and also operated a school store in Perth. Mollie Heberle d 1982 in Perth WA. Jessie Agnes Heberle d 1975 in Perth.


Elsie G Heberle lived in NSW c1915-21 and then WA. She m Cedric Derrick c1937 and then m Weeks. Died c1942.
Harold Leonard Lawrence Heberle lived in NSW 1921, W.A c1921-40 and then NSW. In the army and navy in World War II. He used the surname Lawrence, after his parents divorce.
Elsie Ernestine Heberle was b 1885 Moonta SA. She d 1915 Woorooloo WA. She m William Gerloff c1911. She taught music, singing and painting.
Leslie Heberle b 1889 Broken Hill NSW d 1968 Perth. Arrived in Fremantle 1898. He m Eva Furniss 1910 Perth. Children: Eva Ernestine (b 1911), Ronald Leslie (b 1913), Phyllis May (b 1915), Eric William (b 1917), Norman (b 1919), Cyril Ernest (b 1925), Harold August (b 1927). Leslie owned garages and car assembling business in Perth, which failed in the Depression c1930. He was a fisherman 1930-32 near Perth and then worked in a Kalgoorlie engineering workshop. He was a fisherman on the south coast of WA 1932-60. Lived in Katanning 1947-64 and Perth 1965-68. Eva Furniss b 1890 Bega NSW and d 1976 Perth. She had a large collection of pressed wildflowers. She sold pressed and dried wildflowers in Perth during the 1962 Empire Games period.
Eva Ernestine Heberle b 1911 Perth. She d 1940 Perth. Worked in a doctor’s surgery, in a grocers shop, for Perth City Council and as a commercial artist.

Ronald Leslie Heberle b 1913 Perth, d 2004 in Perth. He m Pauline Graham in Narrogin. Messenger boy 1926-30. Fished with his father 1930-32 and worked in Kalgoorlie in 1932. Fisherman on the south coast of WA 1932-60, apart from the war years. Lived in Katanning 1946-58 and then Albany. Full time fisherman until 1968 and then fished salmon seasons (February-April) at Doubtful Island Bay and had other jobs in between seasons, including vegetable cannery field operations, and carrier (tip truck). Three orchids were named after the Heberles: Caladenia heberleana (Heberles spider orchid), Diuris heberlei (Heberles donkey orchid) and Prasophyllum paulinae. He has written papers and attended conferences on native orchids. Children: Gregory William, Merilyn Eva, Ronald Graham, Grant Anthony, Patricia Robin (Trish), Milanna Marie.


Pauline Graham Heberle is a daughter of William and Thekla (nee Pustkuchen) Graham. She was b 1922 in Narrogin WA and d 2003 in Perth. Worked in Richardsons variety stores in Katanning and Kojonup 1939-40 and on the family farm near Narrogin 1941-42. Lived in Perth 1943-45, working at Perpetual Trustees. She played pennant tennis in Perth and represented WA in hockey, being selected for Australia in 1946.
Phyllis May Heberle b 1915 d 2005 Perth. She m Frank Merson 1938 in Perth. Worked as shop assistant for Foys in Perth. Lived in Wembley (Perth) 1939-2002. Children: Margaret, Judith.
Eric William Heberle b Perth WA. He m Pearl Bain in 1946 and was divorced in 1951. He m Dorothy Hardingham (Doss) in 1980. Messenger boy in 1931, chicken farmer, monumental mason and fisherman in the Esperance area 1934-39. In the navy 1939-46 and fisherman in 1947. Owned a cafe in Katanning WA until 1950, then built sheds, was an insurance agent 1950-52, managed a poultry farm in Perth 1952-56, then worked for Waroona Abattoirs. He was a chef at Barrow Is, Telfer, Marble Bar, Rippon Hills (1960s-70s). He was involved in tree growing at Telfer until retirement in 1977. Lived in Balcatta (Perth) and Bullsbrook, until d 2003.
Harold August Heberle b 1927 in Perth. He d 1985 Perth WA. Mentally handicapped (Downs syndrome). He lived in nursing homes in Perth.

Gregory William Heberle b 1947 Katanning WA. Did Bachelor of Science in Forestry at University of WA and Australian National University Canberra, graduated 1968. Forests Department officer Manjimup 1968-69, Harvey 1970-76, Manjimup 1976-80, Bunbury 1980-83, Manjimup 1983-85. Worked for the Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) in Manjimup 1985, Bunbury 1987-90, Perth 1990-2001. Fished with the family professional fishing business in March each year 1965-66, 1969-2004. Defacto marriage to Cheryl Head, who changed name to Heberle 1982-92. Children: Tania Renae, Stacey Lee and Brian James. Lived in Nollamara (Perth) 1990-99. Lived in Craigie (Perth) 1999-2004, with partner Wendy Poynton. Retired from CALM 28.6.2001.


Merilyn Eva Heberle b Katanning WA. She contracted poliomyelitis in 1954. Worked at Albany Hospital for 9 years to March 1975 and then Royal Perth and Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital in Perth. She m Robert Adamson in Perth. Children: Melissa and Jacob. Moved to Darwin NT in 1984. Lived in Nhulunbuy NT 1986-90, Katherine NT 1990-2002. Director of family day care in Katherine. Moved to Perth in 2003.
Milanna Marie Heberle b Albany WA. Completed 4 years University of WA and teacher training to December 1988. Physical education teacher in Wanneroo for 3 years, Collie 2 years and Perth 1994+. Played top grade hockey and coached State under-age hockey teams.
Jennifer Tareena Heberle b Katanning WA. Worked in Katanning 1979-90 as a florist, also part time waitress in chinese restaurant, supervisor at Hostel in Katanning in 1991. Joined Wesfarmers Katanning in 1992 as receptionist, then secretary. Transferred to Wesfarmers Rural Finance Section Perth 1994. Married Harold Adams 1995. Lives in Cloverdale (Perth).
Tania Renae Heberle (changed from Head 1991) b Collie WA. Worked as waitress in a coffee lounge, supermarket, beauty salon. Lived in Perth 1990-.

Ross worked as a security officer for Mt Newman Mines in Port Hedland and then did an apprenticeship as boiler maker/welder. In March 1989 moved to Rockingham. Supervisor for Coastal Ceilings in Rockingham.

In 1994 there was a Petra Heberle living in Dunedin. She arrived from Germany in c1993. She studied at the Polytechnic "Fashion & Design" and in 1995 was New Zealand young designer of the year. Returned to Germany in 2000.
Beatrix Heberle (Laudenbach branch) of Heidelberg Germany) lived in New Zealand in 1996.
