SENTENCE
It’s an indeterminate unit in the sense that it is often difficult to decide where one ends
and another begins. The clause, however, is in many ways more easily defined than the
sentence. Thus, we define sentences based on whether they have one clause or more than one
clause, setting the limits of the sentence based on wherever grammatical relations cannot be
established between clauses.
Embedding
This is, however, an oversimplified view of the relation between units, as most of the
times the units are indefinitely extensible through the process of embedding, as can be seen in
the sentence:
Some student’s will be working late [in their rooms.]
[in their rooms] prepositional phrase
[their rooms] noun phrase
Also, through the process of embedding, these phrases can be indefinitely extended.
