Children with Disability (Article 7)

  1. Australia does not have a national Children’s Commissioner to specifically promote, advocate and enquire into the rights of all children, including children with disability in Australia. Children and young people with disability are often excluded from decision-making processes aimed at children and young people in general. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children with disability are often not provided with the early intervention supports they require to ensure their full development and participation in community life. This report highlights concerns for children and young people with disability throughout, and recommends that Australia conducts a comprehensive study of the situation of children with disability in Australia with a view to progressing rights contained CRPD and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CROC).
