THEME FROM AN IMAGINARY WESTERN
When the wagons leave the city
For the forest and further on
Painted wagons of the morning
Dusty roads where they have gone
Sometimes travelling through the darkness
Met the Summer coming home
Fallen faces by the wayside
Looked as if they might have known
Oh the sun was in their eye
And the days with the trials
In a country town
Where the laughter sounds
Oh the dancing and the singing
Oh the music when they played
Oh the fires that they started
Oh the girls with no regrets
Sometimes they found it sometimes they kept it
Often they lost it along the way
For each other to possess it
Sometimes ride inside of day
Oh the sun was in their eye
And the days with the trials
In a country town
Where the laughter sounds
Oh the sun was in their eye
And the days with the trials
In a country town
Where the laughter sounds
THERE'S A LIGHT OVER AT THE FRANKENSTEIN PLACE
In the velvet darkness of the blackest night
Looming bright there's a guiding star
No matter what or who you are
There's a light over at the Frankenstein place
There's a light burning in the fireplace
There's a light light in the darkness of everybody's life
Darkness must go down the river of night's dreaming
Flow Morpheus slow let the sun and light come streaming
Into my life into my life
There's a light over at the Frankenstein place
There's a light burning in the fireplace
There's a light light in the darkness of everybody's life
THIRTY-NINE
In the year of thirty-nine assembled here the volunteers
In the days when lands were few
Said the ship roved out on a blue and sunny morn
Sweetest sight ever seen
And the nights they followed day and the storytellers say
That the score brave souls inside
Sailed out for many years way across the milky sea
Ne’er looked back never feared never cried
Don’t you hear my call though you’re many years away
Don’t you hear me calling you
Write your letters in the sand for the day I take your hand
In the land that our grandchildren knew
In the year of thirty-nine came a ship in from the blue
Volunteers came home that day
And they bring good news of a world so newly born
But their hearts so heavily weigh
For the Earth is old and grey little darling we’ll away
But my love this cannot be
For so many years have gone though I’m older but a year
Your mother’s eyes from your eyes cry to me
Don’t you hear my call though you’re many years away
Don’t you hear me calling you
Write your letters in the sand for the day I take your hand
In the land that our grandchildren knew
Don’t you hear my call though you’re many years away
Don’t you hear me calling you
All your letters in the sand cannot heal me like your hand
For my life ahead pity me
THOSE WERE THE DAYS
Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And dreamed of all the great things we would do
Those were the days my friend we thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the live we choose we'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way
La la la la la la, la la la la la la
Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days
Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance I'd see you in the tavern
We'd smile at one another and we'd say
Those were the days my friend we thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the live we choose we'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way
La la la la la la, la la la la la la
Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days
Just tonight I stood before that tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was this lonely fellow really me
Those were the days my friend we thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the live we choose we'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way
La la la la la la, la la la la la la
Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days
through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw you face and heard you call my name
Oh my friend, we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same
Those were the days my friend we thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the live we choose we'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way
La la la la la la, la la la la la la
Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days
THREE TIMES A LADY
Thanks for the times that you’ve given me
The memories are all in my mind
And now that we’ve come to the end of our rainbow
There’s something I must say out loud
You’re once twice three times a lady
And I love you
Yes you’re once twice three times a lady
And I love you I love you
(You’ve shared my dreams my joys my pains)
(You’ve made my life worth living for)
(And if I had to live my life over again dear)
(I’d spend each and every moment with you)
(You’re once twice three times a lady)
(And I love you)
(You’re once twice three times a lady)
(And I love you I love you)
When we are together the moments I cherish
With every beat of my heart
To touch you to hold you to feel you to need you
There’s nothing to keep us apart
You’re once twice three times a lady
And I love you I love you
TIE YOUR MOTHER DOWN
Get your party gown and get your pigtail down
And get your heart beating baby
Got my timing right and got my act all tight
It’s got to be tonight my little school babe
Your mother says you don’t
And your daddy says you won’t
And I’m boiling up inside
Ain’t no way I’m gonna lose out this time
Tie your mother down, tie your mother down
Lock your daddy out of doors
I don’t need him nosing around
Tie your mother down, tie your mother down
Give me all your love tonight
You’re such a dirty louse go get outta my house
That’s all I ever get from your family ties
In fact I don’t think I ever heard a single little civil word
From those guys
I don’t give a light I’m gonna make out all right
I’ve got a sweetheart hand to put a stop
To all that sniping and grousing
Tie your mother down, tie your mother down
Take your little brother swimming
With a brick that’s all right
Tie your mother down, tie your mother down
Or you ain’t no friend of mine
Your momma and your daddy gonna plague me ‘till I die
I can’t understand it cause I’m a peace loving guy
Tie your mother down, tie your mother down
Get that big big big big big daddy out the door
Tie your mother down, tie your mother down
Give me all your love tonight
TIME AFTER TIME
Lying in my bed I hear the clock ticks I thing of you
All the things circled, confusion is nothing new
Flashed that warm night almost left behind
Suitcase so left me
Time after sometimes you pictured me
I’m walking to find a hope, you’re calling to me
I can’t hear what you’ve said
Then you said go slow, I fall behind
The second hand done right
If you’re lost you can look, and you will find me time after time
If you fall I will catch you I’ll be waiting, time after time
If you’re lost you can look, and you will find me time after time
If you fall I will catch you I’ll be waiting, time after time
I’ve done my pictured face
And darkness has turned to climb
Watch you through the window
You’re wondering it’s fine, O.K.
Scene left, stone left from deep inside
If you’re a big sound of time
If you’re lost you can look, and you will find me time after time
If you fall I will catch you I’ll be waiting, time after time
The second hand done right
If you’re lost you can look, and you will find me time after time
If you fall I will catch you I’ll be waiting, time after time
TIME IS ON MY SIDE
Time is on my side oh yes it is
I said time is on my side oh yes it is
Now you always say
That you wanna be free
But you come running back
You come running back
You come running back to me
Time is on my side oh yes it is
I said time is on my side oh yes it is
You're searching for good times
But just wait and see
You'll come runnin' back
You'll come runnin' back
You'll come runnin' back to me
Girl girl go on I said go ahead a lot of the time
And baby do anything your heart desires
Remember I'll be around
But I know I know like I told you so many times before
That you are gonna turn back
Yeah you're gonna come back one of these days
Gonna hammer right on my door
Time is on my side oh yes it is
I said time is on my side oh yes it is
Cause I've got the real love
The kind that you need
You'll come runnin' back
You'll come runnin' back
You'll come runnin' back to me
Yes time time time is on my side oh yes it is
I said time is on my side oh yes it is
I said time time time is on my side oh yes it is
I said time is on my side oh yes it is
TIME WARP
It's astounding time is fleeting
Madness takes it's toll
But listen closely
Not for very much longer
I've got to keep control
I remember doing the time warp
Drinking those moments when
The blackness would hit me
And the voice would be calling
Let's do the time warp again
It's just a jump to the left and a step to the right
Put your hand on your hips and bring your knees in tight
It's the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane
Let's do the time warp again
It's so dreamy
Oh fantasy free me
Till you can't see me no not at all
In another dimension
With voyeuristic intention
Well secluded I see all
With a bit of a mind flip
You're into a time slip
And nothing can ever be the same
You're spaced out on sensation
Like you're under sedation
Let's do the time warp again
It's just a jump to the left and a step to the right
Put your hand on your hips and bring your knees in tight
It's the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane
Let's do the time warp again
Well I was walking down the street just a having a think
When this snake of a guy gave me an evil wink
He looked me up he took me by surprise
He had a pickup truck and the devils eyes
He stared at me and I felt the change
Time meant nothing after what I gained
Let's do the time warp again
It's just a jump to the left and a step to the right
Put your hand on your hips and bring your knees in tight
It's the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane
Let's do the time warp again
THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGING
Come gather around people wherever you roam
And admit that the waters around you have grown
And accept it that soon you'll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you is worth saving
Then you better start swimming or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changing
Come writers and critics, who prophecies with your pen
And keep your eyes wide the change won't come again
And don't speak too soon for the wheel's still in spin
And there's no telling who that is naming
For the loser now will be later to win
For the times they are a-changing
Come senators, congressmen, please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway, don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside and it's raging
It'll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changing
Come mothers and fathers throughout the land
And don't criticise what you don't understand
Your sons and your daughters are beyond your command
Your old road is ripply again
Please get out of the new one if you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changing
The line it is drawn the curse it is cast
The slow one now will later be fast
As the present now will later be past
The order is rapidly fading
And the first one now will later be last
For the times they are a-changing
TO ALTHEA FROM PRISON
When love with unconfined wings hovers within my gates
And my divine Althea brings to whisper at my grates
When thy light angled in her hair and fettered with her eye
Birds that wanton in the air know no such liberty
When flowing cups run swiftly round with no allay intends
Our careless heads with roses crowned our hearts with royal flames
When thirsty grief in wine we steep when healths and draughts run free
Fishes that tickle in the deep know no such liberty
Stone walls do not a prison make nor iron bars a cage
Minds innocent and quiet take that as a hermitage
If I have freedom in my love and in my soul am free
Angels alone that soar above enjoy such liberty
TO BE A FARMER’S BOY
The sun had set behind yon hill across the dreary moor
Weary and lame a poor boy came unto a farmer’s door
Can you tell me if here it be that I can find employ
To plough and sow to reap and mow
And be a farmer’s boy and be a farmer’s boy
My father’s dead my mother’s left with children great and small
And what is worse for mother still I’m the oldest of them all
Though small I be though I’ll work hard if you would me employ
To plough and sow to reap and mow
And be a farmer’s boy and be a farmer’s boy
And if you will not me employ one favour I must ask
To shelter me ‘till break of day from this cold winter’s blast
At break of day away I’ll go elsewhere to seek employ
To plough and sow to reap and mow
And be a farmer’s boy and be a farmer’s boy
Come try the lad the mistress said let him no further seek
Oh father do the daughter cried as the tears rolled down her cheek
A man that’ll work is hard to find so father him employ
Don’t turn him away but let him stay
And be a farmer’s boy and be a farmer’s boy
As time the lad became a man and the good old farmer died
Leaving the lad the farm he had and his daughter for his bride
The lad that was a man now is oft smiles as he thinks with joy
And he blesses that day he came that way
To be a farmer’s boy and be a farmer’s boy
TO KNOW HER IS TO LOVE HER
To know know know her
Is to love love love her
Just to see her smile
Makes my life worthwhile
To know know know her
Is to love love love her
And I do and I do and I do
I’ll be good to her
I’ll bring love to her
Everyone says there’ll come a day
When I’ll walk alongside of her
Oh yes yes to know know know her
Is to love love love her
And I do and I do and I do
Why can’t she see me
How blind can she be
Someday she’ll see
That she belongs to me
To know know know her
Is to love love love her
Just to see her smile
Makes my life worthwhile
To know know know her
Is to love love love her
And I do and I do and I do
TO LOVE SOMEBODY
There’s a light a certain kind of light
That never shone on me
I want my life to be lived with you
Lived with you
There’s a way everybody say
To do each and every little thing
But what does it bring
If I ain’t got you ain’t got you baby
You don’t know what it’s like
You don’t know what it’s like
To love somebody to love somebody
The way I love you
In my brain I see your face again
I know my frame of mind
You ain’t got to be so blind
And I’m blind so so so very blind
I’m a man can’t you see what I am
I live and I breathe for you
But what good does it do
When I ain’t got you, ain’t got you baby
You don’t know what it’s like
You don’t know what it’s like
To love somebody to love somebody
The way I love you
TOO TIRED
I lay down last night too tired to wake
I had a chill this morning too tired to shake
I got a good poker hand too tired to win
I hear my baby knocking too tired to let her in
I'm tired yeah yeah yeah I'm tired
Too tired too tired for anything
I'm too tired to walk too tired to run
I can hear my baby calling too tired too tired
I'm tired yes I'm tired I'm tired too tired for anything
I'm tired of prosperity I'm tired of luck
I'm sitting on a pin I'm too tired to get up
I'm tired I declare I'm tired
Too tired too tired for anything
THE TORTOISE
He was just a lonely tortoise looking for a home
His little feet were blistered
With the miles he had to roam
I found him in a pet shop
On his cheek there was a tear
On his little back was painted
“Five new pence to clear”
He’s a faithful friend the tortoise
and he’ll love you to the end
And you’ll never need a person
With a tortoise for a friend
I took him from that pet shop
Tied to a piece of string
He was happy in his freedom
You know I think I heard him sing
Then I took him to my sports car
We’d twenty miles to go
I tied him to the bumper
He was grateful for the tow
In the winter we would hibernate
We would both retire
And if he ever got too cold
I’d stick him on the fire
In the summer at the swimming pool
I was so proud of him
I threw him in, he often sank
You know I don’t think he could swim
Then came that day as come it may
To creatures great and small
A drunken driver hit my friend
And he went to the wall
All I found here and there
Were little bits of shell
So I made them into plectrums
And friends I knew this plectrum well
TRAIN IN G
I know you’re travelling but I don’t know where
I’d leave here with you but I just can’t pay my fare
Take me to some better place to be
Now tell me baby don’t you want a man like me
I came in the summer with the bright lights on my mind
I tried to make it but I soon got left behind
If you deal me one good hand to play
Then I swear I’ll keep your secret when your man comes back one day
Hey now baby won’t you take me on your train
We’ll leave tomorrow and we won’t come back again
And if the sun don’t shine on our back door
Then you can leave me in the morning if you just let me know what for
TRAVELLING BAND
Seven thirty seven coming out of the sky
Won't you take me down to Memphis on a midnight ride
I wanna move playing in a travelling band yeah
Well I'm flying 'cross this land just to get a hand
Playing in a travelling band
Take me to the hotel baggage going nowhere
Come on come on won't you get me to my room
I wanna move playing in a travelling band yeah
Well I'm flying 'cross this land just to get a hand
Playing in a travelling band
Listen to the radio talking 'bout the last show
Someone got excited and they called the state malitia
I wanna move playing in a travelling band yeah
Well I'm flying 'cross this land just to get a hand
Playing in a travelling band
Here we come again on a Saturday night
With your fussing and your fighting won't you get me to the rock
I wanna move playing in a travelling band yeah
Well I'm flying 'cross this land just to get a hand
Playing in a travelling band
Playing in a travelling band
Playing in a travelling band
Wanna give myself a hand
Cause I'm playing in a travelling band
Well I'm flying 'cross this land just to get a hand
Playing in a travelling band
TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS
Oh she may get weary young girls they do get weary
Wearing that same old shaggy dress but when she gets weary
Try a little tenderness
You know she's waiting just anticipating
The things that she'll never never posses while she's there waiting
Try a little tenderness
That's all you gotta do
You won't regret it some girls they can't forget it
Love is their only happiness but it's all so easy
All you gotta do is try a little gentleness
All you gotta do is try a little gentleness
Hold her squeeze her never leave her
Try a little tenderness
Hold her squeeze her never leave her
Try a little tenderness
Try a little tenderness
All you gotta do is hold her squeeze her
Never leave her gotta please her
Try a little tenderness
Oh yeah squeeze her tease her never leave her
You gotta you gotta you gotta you gotta
Try a little tenderness
Oh yeah squeeze her tease her never leave her
You gotta you gotta you gotta you gotta
Try a little tenderness
Oh yeah squeeze her tease her never leave her
You gotta you gotta you gotta you gotta
Try a little tenderness
Oh yeah squeeze her tease her never leave her
You gotta you gotta you gotta you gotta
Try a little tenderness
Oh yeah squeeze her tease her never leave her
You gotta you gotta you gotta you gotta
Try a little tenderness
Oh yeah squeeze her tease her never leave her
You gotta you gotta you gotta you gotta
Try a little tenderness
TUNNEL OF LOVE
Getting crazy on the waltzer but it’s the life that I choose
Sing about the six blade, sing about the switchback and the torture tattoo
And I’ve been riding on the ghost train where the cars they scream and slam
And I don’t know where I’ll be tonight but I’ll always tell you where I am
In a screaming ring with faces I saw her standing in the light
She had a ticket for the races, just like me she was a victim of the night
I put my hand upon her lever said let it rock and let it roll
I had the one armed bandit fever there was an arrow through my heart and my soul
And the big wheel keep on turning neon burning, up above
And I’m so high on the world come and take a slow ride with me girl
On a tunnel of love, love, love
It’s just a danger when you’re riding at your own risk
She said you are the perfect stranger and she said baby lets keep it like this
It’s just a kick, walk, twisting daily and step right up and see
Hey mister, hey mister gimme two, gimme two now `cause any two can play
And the big wheel keep on turning, neon burning up above
And I’m so high on the world come and take a slow ride with me babe
On a tunnel of love, love, love
Well It’s been money for muscle on another whirligig
Money for muscle and another girl I dig
Just a hustle just to make it big
And rock away, rock away, oh rock away, rock away
Girl you look so pretty to me just like it always did
Like the Spanish City to me when we were kids
Girl you look so pretty to me just like it always did
Like the Spanish City to me when we were kids
She took off a silver locket she said remember me by this
She put her hand in my pocket I got a keepsake and a kiss
And in the roar and dust and visa I stood I was to walk away
I could have caught up with her easy enough but someone must have made me stay
And the big wheel keep on turning neon burning, up above
And I’m so high on the world come and take a slow ride with me girl
On a tunnel of love, love, love
Hey now I’m searching through these carousel and carnival arcades
Searching everywhere from steeplechase to palisades
In any shooting gallery where promises are made
To rock away, rock away, Coloured cove to Whitby bay
Girl you look so pretty to me just like it always did
Like the Spanish City to me when we were kids
Girl you look so pretty to me just like it always did
Like the Spanish City to me when we were kids
Girl you look so pretty to me just like it always did
Like the Spanish City to me when we were kids
