Appendix 2—Occupational health and safety
The department is committed to providing a safe and healthy workplace for all its staff and visitors, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1991 (OHS Act).
The department’s Health and Safety Management Arrangements (HSMA) and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Policy set out how it meets this commitment. The HSMA includes details on:
-
the department’s OHS policy and its aims, and the responsibilities of managers, staff, health and safety representatives, staff representative organisations and OHS coordinator
-
compliance with current OHS legislation.
All staff are encouraged to report hazards and incidents in the workplace. The department reports on this data to senior management forums and to the OHS Committee. Local health and safety committees are involved in monitoring activities within their area of responsibility. This includes monitoring reports of hazards, injury and disease, OHS inspections and following up on and implementing recommendations.
If incidents do occur, the department helps ill and injured staff return to work in a safe work environment. This is in accordance with the department’s fitness for duty and rehabilitation policy and guidelines.
