  • the Netherlands

Project Title: PREPARED - Enabling Change

  • Project Title: PREPARED - Enabling Change

    • Adaptation of water supply and sanitation systems to cope with climate change
  • Budget: 10.7 mill EUR;

  • EU Support: 7 mill EUR (FP7)

  • Project duration: 4 years

  • Project start: 1 February 2010

  • Partners: 35

The PREPARED project

  • Gathers urban utilities in Europe and worldwide that (will) have an advanced strategy in meeting the upcoming challenges for water supply and sanitation brought about by climate change.

  • Coordinating institute: KWR Watercycle Research Institute

  • the Netherlands (Coordinator Adriana Hulsmann)

Surface water availability

  • Surface water availability

  • Groundwater availability

  • Surface water quality impact

  • Exeter UK

Challenges: climate change

  • Identified impacts of climate change either expected or

  • already observed for water supply and sanitation systems

  • Water supply:

  • Surface water availability

  • Change in run-off patterns and surface water quality

  • Groundwater availability (decreased natural recharge)

  • Saline intrusion in groundwater in coastal area

  • Changing demand patterns, land use (temperature, crop)

  • Flooding of well field

  • Bio-growth in distribution network

  • Treatment efficiency

  • Sanitation:

  • Extreme precipitation (sustainable drainage, CSO, increased storage, WWTP)

  • Salt water intrusion

Technology heart of PREPARED

Enabling change

  • What will the PREPARED

  • project deliver?

The PREPARED project deliverables (1)

  • Will produce a catalogue/portfolio of tested and demonstrated adaptive solutions for the water sector

  • (on-line version for the future)

  • Will develop Water Cycle Safety Plans (generic risk management framework)

The PREPARED project deliverables (2)

  • What are the links between PREPARED and EU policy?

4. UWWTD and BWD drivers behind investments urban water cycle

  • 4. UWWTD and BWD drivers behind investments urban water cycle

  • Stricter national standards will increase investment needs (CSO).

  • BWD allows the use of EWS for overflows in receiving waters.

  • 6. Infiltration of residual waste from desalination in the ground.
