6.3 Output One: Peace & Development Exchange


Description: The project is envisaged to contribute to efforts on enhancing South Africa’s regional and global role in peace, security and development through the promotion of development exchanges between UNDP Country Offices, collaboration between think-tanks and academic institutions with policy makers. Provision of neutral forum for debate and exchange of information and publication of knowledge products (reports, policy briefs and training), and implementation of the Partnership Framework Agreement
Activity 1: Develop and implement the South-South Cooperation Development Programme
Purpose: Appoint a consultant to review south-south trends and priorities within the UN, public sector and potential donor partners. In partnership with DIRCO & National Treasury an intern will be identified to support the programme. The consultant is also expected to define the south-south baseline in South Africa and develop a programme thereof. The programme will also activities to implement the Partnership Framework Agreement

Disaster Risk Management

Support government in developing an integrated and coherent approach to disaster management (from prevention to recovery) to ensure a strong resilience perspective at the centre of the Government work. The initiative will seek to build capacity of the system (communities and Government) to be innovative, flexible and responsive to unplanned economic, political and social changes associated with climate changes and urban spatial patterns. This may also include an element of SA’s regional support to disaster risk reduction and management, through the NDMC.

Pilot project on managing urban risks in a climate change context at local government level, and involves training at community level, and urban risk profiling for the most vulnerable areas of the City of Johannesburg and drafting of an integrated risks reduction strategy with a particular focus on promoting resilience, food security, increasing knowledge at local and government level around drivers for urban risks.

Mainstreaming Innovation

Build institutional capacity to mainstream innovation in the South Africa and the region within the public sector to improve service delivery and overall good governance. This would entail exploring funding mechanisms for public sector innovation; replication of successful and workable innovations in health and other sectors; and co-ordination and promotion of fore-sighting capacities for planning and innovation in South Africa and the region.
