TWAS-icipe Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme

Programme Details

  • TWAS-icipe Postdoctoral Fellowships in natural sciences are tenable for a minimum period of six months to a maximum period of twelve months at icipe.

  • For a complete overview of eligible research interests please visit the icipe website: www.icipe.org

  • icipe will provide a standard monthly allowance which should be used to cover living costs, such as accommodation, food and health insurance. Only emergency medical aid will be available, if needed. The monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency.

  • The language of instruction is English.

Eligibility

Applicants for these Fellowships must meet the following criteria:



  • Apply for the TWAS-icipe Postdoctoral Fellowship within five years of completion of their PhD qualification;

  • be nationals of a developing country (other than Kenya);

  • must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in Kenya or any developed country;

  • hold a PhD degree in a field of the natural sciences;

  • be regularly employed in a developing country (other than the host country) and hold a research assignment there;

  • provide evidence that s/he will return to their home country on completion of the fellowship;

  • not take up other assignments during the period of his/her fellowship;

  • be accepted at an icipe department participating in the scheme and provide an official acceptance letter from the head of the department (see sample Acceptance Letter, on page 6). Requests for acceptance must be directed to Lillian Igweta, Training Officer (see contact details below) by providing a copy of the CV and a research proposal outline;

  • provide evidence of proficiency in English, if medium of education was not English;

  • be financially responsible for any accompanying family member.

Submitting your application

The call for applications is open from April until 15 September of each year.



  • Applicants should submit the acceptance letter when applying or by the deadline at the latest. Without preliminary acceptance, the application will not be considered for selection.



  • Reference letters must be on letter-headed paper, SIGNED and sent as attachments via e-mail directly to TWAS. The subject line must contain icipe/PDoc and the candidate’s surname. N.B. Only signed reference letters can be accepted. The letters can be submitted either by the referee or by the applicant directly.



  • Applicants to the TWAS-icipe Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme should send their application to TWAS only (by email).

TWAS-UPM Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme

Programme Details

  • TWAS-UPM Postdoctoral Fellowships are tenable in the departments, institutions and laboratories of the Universiti Putra Malaysia – www.upm.edu.my – for a minimum period of six (6) months to a maximum period of twelve (12) months are awarded to young scientists from developing countries (other than Malaysia) to enable them to pursue advanced research in the natural sciences.

  • UPM will provide a standard monthly allowance which should be used to cover living costs, such as accommodation, food and health insurance.

  • The award of the fellowship is subject to obtaining in due course a final offer letter of admission from UPM that must be approved by the UPM University’s Committee. Upon receipt of the UPM-TWAS award letter from TWAS, candidates will need to contact in due course the UPM School of Graduate Studies to apply for the final offer letter. In case the application for the final offer letter of admission is not approved by UPM, this award will become null and void.

  • The language of instruction is English.

Eligibility

Applicants for these Fellowships must meet the following criteria:



  • be nationals of a developing country (other than Malaysia);

  • must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in Malaysia or any developed country;

  • hold a PhD degree in a field of the natural sciences;

  • apply for the fellowship within five (5) years of having obtained a PhD degree in a field of the natural sciences;

  • be regularly employed in a developing country (other than Malaysia) and hold a research assignment there;

  • provide an official Acceptance Letter (see sample Acceptance Letter, page 6). Requests for an acceptance letter must be directed to the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, UPM (email: dean.sgs@upm.my) who will facilitate assignment of a host supervisor. The acceptance letter must come from the Dean of the UPM School of Graduate Studies only (and NOT from any Head of Department or supervisors at UPM).

  • In contacting the Dean of the UPM School of Graduate Studies, the applicants must accompany their request for an acceptance letter with copy of their latest CV, a short write-up of research proposal (maximum 3 pages), a copy of the PhD certificate and the transcripts of each degree qualification starting from the BSc;

  • provide evidence of proficiency in English, if medium of education was not English;

  • be financially responsible for any accompanying family members;

  • provide evidence that s/he will return to her/his home country on completion of the fellowship;

  • not take up other assignments during the period of her/his fellowship.

Submitting your application

  • In contacting the IPS Dean applicants must accompany their request for an acceptance letter by complying to all the following requirements:

- Filling in an Application Form online ONLY via the following link: http://www.ips.usm.my/index.php/downloads/TWAS-USM;

Provide copy of all the following documents:

- Latest CV;

- List of Publications;

- Certified copies of Bachelor, Master and PhD certificates,

- PhD Thesis abstract;

-  Front page of publications;

- Letter of recommendation from current employer (date: DD/MM/2015);

- A summary proposal (maximum: 3 pages);

- Some evidence of proficiency in English.

Only requests for preliminary acceptance letters that contain ALL the above required documents will be processed by the IPS, USM.


  • The deadline for the online application form and for submitting requests for an acceptance letter to the Dean of the Institute of Postgraduate Studies (IPS), USM, is 15 June 2015. Therefore, please apply for the acceptance letter from the IPS Dean before this date. NB: The acceptance letter will not be issued by the Dean of IPS, USM after 15 June.

TWAS-CONACYT Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme

Programme Details

  • TWAS-CONACYT Postdoctoral Fellowships are tenable at research centers and institutions of higher education and research in Mexico recognized by CONACYT, for a minimum period of six to a maximum period of twelve months and are awarded to scientists from developing countries (other than Mexico) to enable them to pursue advanced research in the natural sciences and related fields.

  • All major public and private institutions of higher education and research centers in Mexico are recognized by CONACYT. More information can be provided by the CONACYT’s contact person indicated below.

  • CONACYT will provide a standard monthly allowance which should be used to cover living costs, such as accommodation and food.

  • CONACYT will also provide a fixed amount for mandatory health insurance coverage.

  • Important note: Successful applicants must obtain a temporal resident student visa before arriving to Mexico, in order to receive the fellowship. CONACYT will not provide the fellowship to grantees travelling to Mexico on a tourist visa.

Eligibility

Applicants for these Fellowships must meet the following criteria:



  • hold a PhD degree in a field of the natural sciences;

  • apply for the fellowship within five years of having obtained a PhD degree in a field of the natural sciences;

  • be nationals of a developing country (other than Mexico);

  • must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in Mexico or any developed country;

  • be regularly employed in a developing country (other than Mexico) and hold a research assignment there;

  • prove knowledge of Spanish or provide a certificate of proficiency in English (if these languages were not the medium of education);

  • provide evidence that s/he will return to her/his home country on completion of the fellowship;

  • not take up other assignments during the period of her/his fellowship;

  • be financially responsible for any accompanying family members.

  • TWAS-CEMB Postdoctoral Fellowships are tenable at departments of the National Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB) – www.cemb.edu.pk – for a minimum period of six months to a maximum period of twelve months in the following fields: molecular biology, molecular genetics, plant molecular biology or medical molecular biology.

  • CEMB will provide a monthly stipend which should be used to cover living costs such as food, accommodation and health insurance. The monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency.

  • The language of instruction is English.

Eligibility

Applicants for these fellowships must meet the following criteria:



  • be a maximum age of 45 years on 31 December of the year of application;

  • be nationals of a developing country (other than Pakistan);

  • must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in Pakistan or any developed country;

  • be regularly employed in a developing country (other than Pakistan) and hold a research assignment there;

  • hold a PhD degree in a field of natural sciences;

  • provide an official Acceptance Letter from CEMB (see sample Acceptance Letter, page 6). Requests for acceptance must be sent to Prof. Dr. Tayyab Husnain, Acting Director, CEMB, by e-mail: director@cemb.edu.pk and tayyabhusnain@yahoo.com) who will facilitate assignment of a host supervisor. In contacting Prof. Dr. Tayyab Husnain applicants must accompany their request for an Acceptance Letter with copy of their CV and a research proposal outline;

  • The deadline for submitting requests for an acceptance letter to Prof. Dr. Tayyab Husnain is 31 July 2015. Therefore, please apply for the acceptance letter from him before this date.
