EGYPT:
Approximate Distance: 1500 km’s
Estimated Time Of Year: End of October
We will be starting in Alexandria and working our way south following the Nile traveling on both the East and West bank. Once we make it to Aswan, we will hop on a ferry headed to Sudan via Lake Nasser, which is a man made reservoir. We will be sticking close to the Nile as this will be the source for a majority of our drinking water. The Sahara sun and high winds are just two examples of challenges we will face.

A great deal of our trip will be through the Rift Valley, famous for its unique geography. This will be a particularly challenging leg of our route, as we will encounter lots of challenging topography.. Hazards for Ethiopia include the obvious, dehydration and the not so typical, stone throwing from young children (mentioned in numerous online blogs and Bradt’s Africa Overland).

We can be sure to expect encounters with wildlife while in this country dominated by the Serengeti landscape. Humans are not the only species on Earth that depend on water for survival. The fate of these precious animals rests on the continued availability of clean water. Within Tanzania we will also participate in a climb to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro, one of the few glaciers on the continent. The few African glaciers are melting at an alarming rate and are expected to melt entirely in a matter of years. The symbolism of this melting of Africa’s last remaining glaciers sheds light on Africa’s forecasted water situation .

It still remains fairly untouched by commercial tourist development and is a fantastic destination for exploring, birding, game-viewing and challenging off-road driving
November to March – hot with thunder showers, excellent bird-watching season as migrants come from the north.
Generally the standard of medical care is poor with equipment and medicines in short supply. There are private hospitals for those who can afford it. Visitors must protect themselves with malaria prophylactics
Generally the roads out of the main cities are quite poor and there is no AA or breakdown service in Zambia. Make sure you are prepared for any eventuality by carrying a range of tools, spare wheels and tubes and jerry cans with extra fuel and water. Many of the villages along the main routes offer tyre repair services but may not have spare tubes, patches or valves, so take your own.

A 50 km/h speed limit applies in urban areas while 80 km/h is the maximum speed that can be maintained on all other roads. Roadblocks may be found on major routes into and out of large towns. The roadworthiness of vehicles will be checked.
Tourist Info:
Less challenging months are between October and March, although heavy rain can create swollen rivers which often block roads.
There is no restriction on the amount of consumer goods that may be imported, although eggs, maize and maize products, livestock and its by-products require an import permit and a detailed inventory of the weight and cost of the goods
