Electrical Engineering

Signals and Systems with MATLAB

AUTHOR:

Won Young Yang, Chung-Ang University, Seoul, Korea

ISBN-13:

978-3-540-92953-6

PAGES/ILLUS:

I, 380 p., Hardcover

PRICE:

$99.00

AVAILABLE (US):

April 2009

The fully comprehensive text covers most of the theoretical foundations and mathematical derivations that will be used in higher-level related subjects such as signal processing, communication, and control, minimizing the mathematical difficulty and computational burden.

Complying actively with the requirement by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) on integrating computer tools, it illustrates the usage of MATLAB and Simulink for signal and system analysis and design.

The ideas are developed gradually with continual reference to the practical situations where they would be applicable. Many worked examples have been included in order to help develop the idea and to illustrate the material as it is presented. Throughout the book continuous-time and discrete-time signals/systems have been developed in parallel to save the time/space for explaining the two similar ones as far as there is no concern over confusion.

SELLING POINTS:

  • MATLAB is integrated extensively into the text

  • Appendices present MATLAB commands and Simulink blocksets for signal processing application

  • Many examples illustrate key concepts, stimulate interest, and bring out connections with any application

  • Covers the theoretical basis and mathematical derivations

Traditionally, scientific research in all disciplines has demanded single-mindedness, exclusive devotion, and aggressive self-promotion. The image of the scientist in the laboratory at all hours of the night and weekend is not far from the reality sometimes demanded. Because of the structure of the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) curricula and workplace environment, women often work up to 80 hours per week with little time for outside pursuits – let alone extracurricular reading. Yet, precisely because of these demands, it is imperative that they build solid mentoring relationships.

This handbook aims to provide a quick, yet structured guide to mentoring including finding the right mentors, being a good mentee, and making the most out of today’s diverse mentoring environments. A handy resource guide will be included for quick reference

SELLING POINTS:

  • Provide a quick, yet structured guide to mentoring

  • A handy resource guide will be included for quick reference

  • Most comprehensive handbook catered to women in STEM

MARKET:

The target audience for this book is graduate, post-doc, and early career women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Statistical genetics has become a core course in many graduate programs in public health and medicine. This book presents fundamental concepts and principles in this emerging field at a level that is accessible to students and researchers with a first course in biostatistics. Extensive examples are provided using publicly available data and the open source, statistical computing environment, R.

SELLING POINTS:

  • This book has several unique components when compared to existing texts including:

  • Consideration of concepts relevant to population-based studies, including methods for handling demographic and clinical characteristics

  • A presentation that appeals to readers with a limited background in statsitics

  • Practical programming examples that provide readers with the tools for implementing the described methods

Conifer Reproductive Biology

AUTHOR:

Claire G. Williams, Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences and Department of Biology, Duke University, Durham, NC, USA

ISBN-13:

978-1-4020-9601-3

PAGES/ILLUS:

approx. 210 p., Hardcover

PRICE:

approx. $91.00

AVAILABLE (US):

June 2009

Like other areas of the life sciences, conifer biology is going through a reductionist phase, as much of our current intellectual attention focuses on genome sequencing. But the genomics data must eventually be reconciled with its adaptive phenotypic information, and this is only possible if a comparative framework at the whole-organism level is available. The aim of this book is to integrate genomics, evolution and morphology around the time-honored subject of conifer reproduction. This is a challenge given that few conifer lineages (roughly 550 species) survived the Mesozoic era. Few realize that modern conifers are living fossils and their reproductive characters have changed little since.
Presenting the latest thinking and knowledge on conifer reproductive biology, this text provides an essential supplementary text to existing books on plant – primarily angiosperm – biology. It also includes insights into the economic and cultural history of conifers, which lend additional understanding to the current biogeography of this important group of plants.

SELLING POINTS:

  • Only current book on conifer reproduction

  • Author a recognised expert in the field

  • Fills an important gap in botanical knowledge

  • Commodity value of conifers is significant

MARKET:

Forestry and plant biology research/graduate teaching in Europe, Canada, UK, Australia and NZ – and USA as a reference, supplementary text and graduate course book for specialized courses in Gymnosperm biology, ecology and evolution.

The Advanced Planner and Optimiser (APO) is the software from SAP dedicated to supply chain management. This book provides an overview about the supported SCM processes and explains how to implement APO in a company. It is written from a long years' experience in implementation projects and aims to provide project managers and team members with the necessary know how for a successful implementation project. The focus of the book lies in introducing modelling approaches and explaining the structure and interdependencies of systems, modules and entities of APO based on the release SAP SCM 2008. Another concern is the integration with R/3, both technically and from a process point of view. Since APO projects differ significantly from other SAP projects, some key issues and common mistakes concerning project management are mentioned as well.

SELLING POINTS:

  • Necessary knowledge for a successful implementation of APO

  • Detailed information on APO architecture, modeling approaches, structure and interdependencies of systems as well as system integration

  • Based on the new release SAP SCM 2008

MARKET:

Project managers, project team members, and consultants involved in APO implementation
