Resources for rehabilitation specialists tend to follow a straight line: injury—disability—limitation—intervention. The International Handbook of Occupational Therapy Interventions breaks with this tradition, organized by type of intervention (based on recommendations in the International Classification of Functioning) rather than disability, medical condition, or level of impairment. This innovative, user-friendly system identifies candidates for particular interventions in terms of the range of syndromes and illnesses they are applicable to, encouraging critical thinking, problem solving, and best practice. The book’s wide spectrum of interventions coupled with its international perspective creates a unique source of evidence-based strategies for improving patient adaptation, functioning, and recovery.

SELLING POINTS:

  • This book utilizes an entirely new organizational system based around intervention to increase its functionality in clinical settings

  • First book to be structured on the goals of Occupational Therapy: patient adaption, learning, recovery and health/wellness promotion

  • Supplies reference lists of studies regarding the clinical efficacy of interventions

  • Demonstrates the use of a common technical language for the field

Hypertension and diabetes show a strong epidemiologic association. About 75% of adults with diabetes have blood pressure levels =130/80 mmHg or use antihypertensive medication and this percentage goes up to 90% if microalbuminuria is also present. On the other hand, individuals with hypertension are 2.5 times more likely to develop diabetes within 5 years of diagnosis. The presence of hypertension in patients with diabetes substantially increases the risk for both cardiovascular and renal diseases and is associated with a 7.2-fold increase in mortality, whereas in those with diabetes and diabetic nephropathy, hypertension causes a 37-fold increase in mortality.

SELLING POINTS:

  • Presents to primary care providers as well as to sub-specialists an integrative approach to hypertension and diabetes including lifestyle and pharmacological approaches

  • Focus is on overall cardiovascular risk reduction with special emphasis on high- risk population

  • Provide an overview of the preventive measures for both hypertension and diabetes in the light of the most recent clinical trials

  • Discusses the future outlook for the epidemic and the ongoing clinical studies together with the various innovative diagnostic modalities

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the US and a leading cause of disability among adults. Stroke is not an accident but occurs in relation to a number of risk factors or antecedents. Hypertension is the most important modifiable risk factor for stroke, and blood pressure level may play an important role in determining outcome after acute ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. Hypertension remains poorly controlled in the community at-large, and once stroke occurs clinicians are not certain about proper management of blood pressure during the acute, subacute and chronic periods after stroke. Given the importance placed on hypertension as a risk factor for stroke and new data which is now available from clinical trials regarding management of hypertension for stroke prevention and after stroke, a compendium is needed to concisely summarize the available data on hypertension and stroke and direct clinicians about proper treatment of blood pressure.

SELLING POINTS:

  • Address the epidemiology, mechanism, and pathophysiology of hypertension and blood pressure in relation to stroke and other brain sequelae of abnormal blood pressure

  • Includes results of clinical trials demonstrating best suggested practice modalities to manage blood pressure and hypertension

  • Provides practical management tips for controlling blood pressure and hypertension
