Figure 4.6 c Overall prevalence of active trachoma among children aged 5-9 years in all communities* by region, Western Australia 2007-2016

overall prevalence of active trachoma among children aged 5-9 years in all communities* by region, western australia 2007-2016 figure 4.6c is a line graph illustrating the active trachoma prevalence overall in children aged 5 to 9 years in communities that were screened in the years 2007 to 2016 in goldfields, kimberley, midwest and pilbara. goldfields data indicates an increase from 3% in 2007, to 11.8% in 2009, dipping to 9.3% in 2010, increasing to 12.8% in 2011 and decreasing gradually to 6.3% in 2016. kimberley data indicates a gradual decreasing trend from 16.6% in 2007 to 1.7% in 2015 and a slight increase to 1.9% in 2016. midwest data indicates 20.2% in 2007, dipping to 14.6% in 2008, up to 17.4% in 2009, dipping to 6.8% in 2010, 9% in 2011, stays around 4% in 2012 to 2013, increasing to 11.5% in 2014, dropping to 8.5% in 2016. pilbara data indicates 16.7% in 2007, a peak at 26.1% in 2008, 13.2% in 2009, and incremental decrease to 1.7% in 2014 and 2015, ending with an increase to 2.5% in 2016.

* Calculated carrying forward most recent data in all communities considered at risk of trachoma at some time since 2007

Figure 4.7 Number of at-risk communities* according to level of trachoma prevalence in children aged 5-9 years by region, Western Australia 2016

number of at-risk communities* according to level of trachoma prevalence in children aged 5-9 years by region, western australia 2016 figure 4.7 is a stacked bar graph indicating prevalence in the number of screened at-risk communities by region in goldfields, kimberley, midwest and pilbara. goldfields column indicates that of 19 communities, 5 have a prevalence of 0%; 1 has a prevalence of greater than 0%, less than 5%; 1 has a prevalence of greater than or equal to 5%, less than 10%; 10 have a prevalence of greater than or equal to 10%, less than 20%; and 2 have a prevalence of greater than or equal to 20%. kimberley column indicates that of 17 communities, 14 have a prevalence of 0%; 0 have a prevalence of greater than 0%, less than 5%; 0 have a prevalence of greater than or equal to 5%, less than 10%; 3 have a prevalence of greater than or equal to 10%, less than 20%; and 0 have a prevalence of greater than or equal to 20%. midwest column indicates that of 7 communities, 5 have a prevalence of 0%; 0 have a prevalence of greater than 0%, less than 5%; 0 have a prevalence of greater than or equal to 5%, less than 10%; 1 has a prevalence of greater than or equal to 10%, less than 20%; and 1 has a prevalence of greater than or equal to 20%. pilbara column indicates that of 8 communities, 6 have a prevalence of 0%; 0 have a prevalence of greater than 0%, less than 5%; 1 has a prevalence of greater than or equal to 5%, less than 10%; 1 has a prevalence of greater than or equal to 10%, less than 20%; and 0 have a prevalence of greater than or equal to 20%.

* Including at-risk communities that did and did not screen in 2016

Figure 4.8 Number of doses of azithromycin administered for the treatment of trachoma by region, Western Australia 2007-2016

number of doses of azithromycin administered for the treatment of trachoma by region, western australia 2007-2016 figure 4.8 is a line graph indicating the number of doses of azithromycin administered for the treatment of trachoma in goldfields, kimberley, midwest and pilbara. goldfields data indicates 70 in 2007, gradually increasing to 359 in 2011, dropping to 219 in 2012, increasing suddenly to 1101 in 2014, ending at 1118 in 2016. kimberley data indicates 1096 doses in 2007 followed by a sharp spike up to 2333 in 2008 (treatments administered in the kimberley in 2007 are likely to have been under-reported, as treatment data were not received from several communities; in the kimberley in 2008, 17 communities were reported to have received ‘community-based treatment’, compared with only seven in 2009). there was a steady decrease from 864 doses in 2009 to 278 in 2013, followed by a steady increase to 564 doses in 2016. midwest data indicates staggering doses at 52 in 2007, 69 in 2008, 182 in 2009, 26 in 2010, 125 in 2011, 10 in 2012, then a gradual increase to 759 in 2016. the pilbara data indicates 183 doses in 2007 increasing to 420 in 2008 followed by a gradual decrease to 0 doses in 2015 then an increase to 48 in 2016.

*Treatments administered in the Kimberley in 2007 are likely to have been under-reported, as treatment data were not received from several communities

†In the Kimberley in 2008, 17 communities were reported to have received ‘community-based treatment’, compared with only seven in 2009
