(summary) This article explores present theoretical approaches to the family institution in the West and the East and analyzes the tendency of sociologists to generate a systematic theory. At the same time the author makes an attempt to define in general terms the main directions and stages of development of sociology of the family. On the other hand based on different structural characteristics of Azerbaijani society the author emphasizes that the validity degree of the family theories which are the product of the West is low.
