La grève de 1892 – Au fur et à mesure que l’année avançait, les prix de l’argent et du plomb s’écroulaient de manière alarmante et les compagnies minières affirmèrent qu’une augmentation de la production était nécessaire pour compenser la baisse des revenus. .Les directeurs des mines décidèrent alors de dénoncer « pour raisons économiques » l’arrangement de 1890 qui interdisait par contrat, l’arrêt de l’extraction du minerai.Cette dénonciation est datée du 27 juin. Lors du rassemblement de masse de plus de 6 000 Unionistes qui se tint sur la Central Reserve le dimanche 3 juillet, on décida la grève générale.Le 16 août, les Compagnies minières décrètèrent que le travail à la mine devait reprendre le 25. Comme le taux de chômage était alors très élevé dans les grandes villes, les premiers « travailleurs libres » (aussi appelés renards) arrivèrent en grand nombre à Broken Hill. Les mineurs en grève jetèrent des pierres sur les trains qui amenaient leurs remplaçants. Il y eut des manifestations de plus en plus importantes, des discours passionés et enflammés et, le 13 septembre, sept meneurs de la grève furent arrêtés pour conspiration illégale et incitation au soulèvement.Au terme du procès que se tint à Deniliquin, six d’entre eux (R. Sleath, E.J. Polkinghorne, R.A. Hewitt, John Bennett, W.J Ferguson et H . Heberle) furent reconnus coupables et condamnés à diverses peines de prison. Le septième unioniste, G. Hurn fut acquitté. Au cours des deux premiers mois de la grève, 1 500 travailleurs extérieurs furent ainsi appelés à la rescousse et leur nombre ne cessa de croître. Le mouvement fut arrêté le 8 novembre.Ce fut un coup dur pour le syndicalisme, la confiance envers ses dirigeant s’était envolée et son déclin dura de nombreuses années. Les conventions qui avaient été fixées à la fin du mouvement sont toujours en vigueur aujourd’hui.

Orphelin à son arrivée aux Etats Unis (ses parents sont morts pendant la traversée), il fut recuilli par son oncle et sa tante, M et Mme Langs jusqu'à ce qu'il soit en âge de travailler; son enfance ne fut donc pas très heureuse, il ne frequenta guère l'école.

Engagé volontaire dans l'Armée du Nord alors qu'il n'avait même pas 16 ans (Compay I, 22nd Regiment sous le commandement du capitaine A.R. Ravenscroft) , participa à 17 batailles avant d'être réformé en 1864. Les deux frères, engagés dans deux armées ennemies finirent par se rencontrer. Charles fut capturé et se livra à William qui fut gratifié d'une prime pour sa capture.Le "Bounty paid" (reçu) de cette prime était en 1993 en possession de Katherine Hepley.

14.04.1999 : Edward Carrol reçoit une copie des papiers de réforme de la guerre civile de William Hepley. Ces documents font apparaître des discordances avec les informations émanant d'Ola, fille de William. Ces papiers affirment qu'il est né à Buffalo, NY, ce qui infirme la version du décès de ses parents pendant la traversée. De plus, la date de naissance qui découle de ces documents se situerait en 1847 et non en 1845, date indiquée par Ola.

31.07.1999 : Allen Headly réceptionne une copie de l'acte de décès de William qui confirme que son lieu de naissance est bien situé en Allemagne et non pas Buffalo, NY comme mentionné par les papiers de réforme.

D'abord enregistré sous Hebwele, son nom de famille fut transformé en Hepley

Notes : Ces dates sont reprises par Oetjens Kerstin qui émet cepandant quelques doutes sur leur exactitude. Les recherches qu'elle avait effectuée elle-même à Clausthal n'ont pas permis de retrouver ces actes. Elle les avait relevées sur le livret de famille mais n'ayant pu les confirmer, elle suppose que les lieux de naissance sont erronés. Ce livret avait été établi en 1937, soit 2 ans après le décès de Friederike. A l'époque de Hitler, il était de coutume de faire figurer dans le livret de famille, un arbre généalogique pour pouvoir prouver ses origines aryennes. Et si d'aventure, les ancêtres n'étaient pas du goût des fonctionnaires du Reich, il fallait y remédier dare dare.
