Pluto was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh - an American astronomer - in 1930 as the ninth planet in the solar system. However, in January 19, 2006, Pluto was regarded as a dwarf planet. In the solar system, there are the inner rocky planets, such as the Earth, Mars, Venus and Mercury, and the outer gas giants, like Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Pluto and its largest moon, Charon, belong to a third category known as “ice dwarfs". They have solid surfaces but, unlike the other planets, their mass is icy material. 250
