Abstract
The interaction between horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and the cryo-hydrogel was probed by using hydrazines which show high specificity of the reaction of the edge in the prosthetic heme of horseradish peroxidase. For comparison, the interaction of hydrazine with the horseradish peroxidase adsorbed on graphite electrode was also carried out by using steady-state response of the enzyme electrode and cyclic voltammetry. In order to obtain a proper explanation of the kinetic parameters for the enzymic reaction, the theor. expressions of Imax and KM' in the Michaelis-Menten equation for the exptl. system were provided.

Abstract
The prepn. and cyclic voltammetric behaviors of self assembled monolayers (SAMs) contg. electroactive viologen group have been investigated. Treatment of this viologen SAM with solns. of alkanethiols results in replacing the electroactive thiol, shifting neg. its formal potentials and decreasing its heterogeneous electron transfer consts. along with the immersion time. The aim of the work is to understand the exchange regularity of the mixed SAMs on gold electrode surface.

Abstract
The volumetric behavior of a chloride complex of Pd was studied at a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The Pd(IV) complex existing on the GCE surface was found, which was proposed to form an octahedral surface complex through coordination to the O atom of an O functional group on the pretreated GCE surface. The ferricyanide/ferrocyanide redox couple was used as a probe to examine the activity of the GCE. XPS provided the evidence of the surface complex existing on the GCE. Highly dispersed Pd particles can be obtained when the surface complexes are reduced electrochem. to Pd atoms. The Pd particles obtained in this way are nanometer in size and exhibit high catalytic activity towards the oxidn. of hydrazine.

Abstract
Chromatog.-amperometric detection of nitrite with a polypyrrole modified glassy carbon electrode doped with tungstodiphosphate anion (Dawson-type P2W18O6-62/PPy/GC electrode) based on its electrocatalytic redn. of nitrite is described. The cyclic and hydrodynamic voltammetry of nitrite at the P2W18O6-62/PPy/GC electrode was studied. The factors affecting the detection of nitrite and the anal. performance of the modified electrode in flowing stream were investigated. The results show that the modified electrode has a good sensitivity (the limit of detection is 1m moldm-3) and a satisfactory reproducibility (RSD = 3.78%, N = 21). The modified electrode was used in the chromatog. detection of nitrite spiked in the liq. from a tin of mushrooms and the mineralized spring water. It was found that the modified electrode exhibited good selectivity for nitrite.

Abstract
Monolayers of biol. compds. including redox proteins and enzymes, and phospholipids have been immobilized on a gold electrode surface through self-assembling. These proteins and enzymes, such as cytochrome c, cytochrome c oxidase and horseradish peroxidase (HRP), immobilized covalently to the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 3-mercaptopropionic acid on a gold electrode, communicate directly electrons with the electrode surface without mediators and keep their physiol. activities. The electron transfer of HRP with the gold electrode can also be mediated by the alkanethiol SAMs with electroactive group viologens on the gold electrode surface. All these direct electrochemistries of proteins and enzymes might offer an opportunity to build a third generation of biosensors without mediators for analytes, such as H2O2, glucose and cholesterol. Monensin and valinomycin have been incorporated into the bilayers on the gold electrode consisting of the SAMs of alkanethiol and a lipid monolayer, which have high selectivity for monovalent ions, and the resulting Na+ or K+ sensor has a wide linear range and high stability. These self-assembly systems provide a good mimetic model for studying the physiol. function of a membrane and its assocd. enzyme.

Abstract
Comb-like polymers (CP) based on modified alternating Me vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer with oligo-oxyethylene side chains of the type-O(CH2CH2O)nCH3 were synthesized and characterized, and complexed with lithium salts [LiClO4, LiCF3SO3] to form amorphous polymer electrolytes. The CP/salt complexes showed cond. up to 10-5 S/cm at room temp., as solid electrolyte films. The temp. dependence of ionic cond. suggests that the ion transport is controlled by segmental motion of the polymer, shown by linear curves obtained in Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher plots. The ionic cond. max. moves to a higher salt concn. as the temp. increases. IR results indicate that the ester in CP might decomp. at 140° releasing the maleic anhydride ring.

Abstract
The properties are described of PEG polymer electrolyte as a solvent medium for solid-state voltammetry, and the results are given for the dependence of diffusive transport of electroactive solutes on org. small mols., temp., electrolyte and polymer chain length. The diffusion rate or the current response increases with increasing temp. and decreasing polymer chain length. This phenomenon is explained by free vol. and viscosity theory. The org. mols. exert a greater "plasticizing" effect for the polyelectrolyte. The contribution of self-electron exchange is discussed qual.

Abstract
The steady state voltammogram at a microdisk electrode was used to measure the diffusion coeff. and std. heterogeneous rate const. (ks) of ferrocene in polyelectrolyte PEG+LiClO4. The ks obtained is smaller in polyelectrolyte than in liq. medium. Probably the polymer solvent electron transfer dynamics are affected by the relaxation rates of the ether dipole sites on the polymer chains, which are in turn constrained by the rates of polymer chain segment, or local structure, relaxations. The dependence of ks on temp. is obsd. The ks increases with increasing temp.

Abstract
Steady-state voltammograms at a microdisk electrode were used to measure the diffusion coeff. (D) and std. heterogeneous rate const. (ks) of ferrocene in polyelectrolyte PEG.MClO4. The diffusion coeff. and std. heterogeneous rate const. of ferrocene are both smaller in polymer solvents than in monomeric solvents. The D and ks of ferrocene were estd. in PEG contg. different concns. and cations of supporting electrolytes, and the dependencies of D and ks on temp. were obsd. The D and ks of ferrocene increase with increasing temp. in polyelectrolyte, and with increasing cation radius of supporting electrolyte, e.g. D and ks increase in the order Bu4NClO4 > NaClO4 > LiClO4. However, D and ks increase with decreasing concn. of supporting electrolyte. The dependence of the half-wave potential (E1/2) on the concn. of the supporting electrolyte is also obsd. The E1/2 shifts in the neg. direction as the concn. of supporting electrolyte increases.

Abstract
The ion exchange mechanism accompanying the oxidn./redn. processes of cupric hexacyanoferrate-modified platinum electrodes in different aq. electrolyte solns. was studied by in situ probe beam deflection and the electrochem. quartz crystal microbalance technique. The charge neutrality of the film during the reoxidn./redn. process is accomplished predominantly by the movement of cations, but anions and/or solvent are also participator(s). Also, in KHC8H4O4 (potassium biphthalate) soln., the EQCM data obtained from a chronoamperometry expt. are more complicated than those in KCl and K2SO4 solns.

Abstract
A novel kind of K+ sensor with valinomycin-incorporated bilayers supported on a gold electrode consisting of self-assembled alkanethiol monolayers (SAMs) and a lipid monolayer has been fabricated successfully. The lipid monolayer is deposited on the alkylated surface of the first alkanethiol monolayer through three different methods, such as the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique, painted method and painted-frozen method. The response of K+ sensors produced by a painted or painted-frozen lipid monolayer on an alkanethiol alkylated gold electrode is larger than that by the LB method, which is due to the difference in fluidity of the three kinds of bilayers. Selectivity coeffs. KK+, Na+, K+K, Li+, K+K, Ca2+ and K+K, Mg2+ are 10-4, 10-4, 2´10-5 and 3´10-5 resp., and there is no obvious difference among different fabricating methods. A linear response toward the potassium ion was found in the range from 10-1 M to 10-5 M with the detection limit of 10-6 M. The sensor has a slope of 60 mV per decade. Meanwhile, the longevity of the sensor was improved obviously for at least two months at about -10°. The higher stability shows the possibility to fabricate a practical biosensor.

Abstract
A stable, well-behaved self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of viologen-functionalized thiol was used to immobilize and elec. connect horseradish peroxidase (HRP) at gold electrode. Viologen groups in SAMs facilitated the electron transfer from the electrode to the protein active site so that HRP exhibited a quasi-reversible redox behavior. HRP adsorbed in the SAMs is very stable, and close to a monolayer with the surface coverage of 6.5´10-11 mol/cm2. The normal potential of HRP is -580 mV vs Ag/AgCl corresponding to ferri/ferro active center and the std. electron transfer rate const. is 3.41 s-1 in 0.1 M phosphate buffer soln. (pH 7.1). This approach shows a great promise for designing enzyme electrodes with other redox proteins and practical use in tailoring a variety of amperometric biosensor devices.
