Xuastvanift - a confession book of Manichean Uyghurs
Xuastvanift is the confession book of the Manichean Uyghurs.
This book is one of the most important and complete text among
the other Old Uyghur Manichean texts. More than a hundred
years ago, it was published by W. Radloff (1909) and A. von Le
Coq (1910/1). After that, some researchers like W. Bang and J.
P. Asmu
ssen also studied on this text. A. von Le Coq’s publication
(1911) was translated into Turkish in 1941. Thereafter, any
detailed study did not publish on Xuastvanift in Turkey. For this
reason, one of our main aim was to prepare a new publication on
this text in Turkish to reach Turkish readers.
In the book two main parts can be seen: the first part is an
introduction part which has some brief information on Manichean
Uyghurs, Manichean literature, Manichaeism, Manichean Art,
Manichean Script, and Sogdian people and their relationship with Uyghurs to present much
broader frame for Turkish readers. On the other hand, the second part of the book contains the
text Xuastvanift. In this part, the text was built according to its longest manuscript London book
roll, since the text has more than twenty copies we only used its other fragments from Berlin and
St. Petersburg to complete the main text (London book roll).
In the second section firstly, we gave the transcription of the text, and in this part we tried to show
some detailed information about a line of the text.
For example:
[337]
k(ä)ntü özümüzni ämgätir biz
(U7a, 1-2; L 299; Spb 139-140)
In this example, the number which is on the left side in the square brackets says that this line is
the 337
th
line of the entire text; and the numbers on the right side, in the round brackets say that
this line belongs to (respectively) the recto side of Berlin U7 fragment the 1
st
-2
nd
lines; London
book roll the 299
th
line, and St. Petersburg the 139
th
-140
th
lines. By using this method, we aimed
to present the entire record information about a line.
Right after the transcription part, Turkish translation and the transliteration of the texts stated.
Finally, the book ends with the interpretation of some problematic points in the text, the glossary
of the text, and the appendix part.
In the appendix part, the images of the Xuastvanift are presented from different copies. Especially,
the colored images of the London book roll (self number: Or.8212/178) is very important because
after A. Von Le Coq's black and white images, fortunately the colored images of this manuscript
can be seen in this book after more than a hundred years later with the great help of British library.
