3.1

Number of reports for each child who was the subject of a report, over the decade

75,382 reports involving 21,349 children. 48% of children in reports were only reported once and 17% were reported twice. 24% of all reports related to children reported once or twice.

65% of children in reports were reported once or twice. 35% of children in reports were reported three or more times.

76% of all reports concern children who are reported three or more times. This is an unusually high proportion, which may be related to the ACT’s caller-defined intake method. It merits further analysis to determine whether there is a relationship between the high number of notifications for a relatively small group of children and actual maltreatment and service need.

ACT has a marked pattern even compared with other jurisdictions showing multiple reports (3 or more) regarding the same child.

Change on 1 Aug 2006 was intended to reduce multiple reports regarding same child. It is not clear that this has had substantial impact.
