Table

Subject

Key findings

Interpretation

1.18

Number of reports of emotional abuse by year, by reporter group, with percentage change

Substantial and sustained increase overall from 1472 in 2003 to 4585 in 2012. Most of this due to reports by other reporters (848 to 2427) and police (314 to 1037).

Sustained increase including high reporting volume by other reporters suggests DV a major driver behind these reports

1.19

Number of reports of neglect by year, by reporter group, with percentage change

Increase from 2003 to 2006 especially by nurses (71 to 253) and other reporters (971 to 2119), followed by stabilisation. Steady increase in teachers’ reports over the decade (134 to 639).

Teachers are by far the largest mandated reporter group reporting N despite it not being mandated maltreatment type.

1.20

Number of reports of physical abuse by year, by reporter group, with percentage change

Overall increase over decade (624 to 1438) and especially from 2003 to 2005 (624 to 1167).

Substantial and sustained increase in reports by teachers (188 to 636), who are by far the single largest reporter group for PA.

Unusual pattern: teachers are by far the largest mandated reporter group reporting PA.

Increase2003-2005 may be influenced by SC and VR but sustained steady rise may be influenced by reporter training and MR duty

1.21

Number of reports of sexual abuse by year, by reporter group, with percentage change

Overall increase over decade (396 to 971) and especially from 2003 to 2005 (396 to 790); stabilisation from 2005 through 2012.

Increases especially by teachers (83 to 231) and police (69 to 199), with police increase notable from 2009 to 2012 (95 to 199).

Increase especially in 2003 to 2005 likely due to SC and VR, media, reporter training.

Increase in police reports 2009-2012 possibly due to reporter training/policy.
