The Central Medical Library was established in 1946. It contains 142,000 books and periodicals, and has a direct med-line connection to the European medical databanks. The University Library offers more than 1,250,000 volumes and periodicals to meet students’ requirements. A new library is under construction and is going to be furnished with up to 700 computers and a reading room seating 1000. On completion, this will be the largest library in East-Central Europe. Computer facilities: A computer room with 24 terminals; workstations at the departments; the students can use computers at the Department of Informatics (Internet available at all locations). Free time and sports activities: Programmes offered through the Department of Physical Education include tennis, swimming, physical fitness and conditioning courses, rowing, soccer, table tennis, water polo, handball, basketball, volleyball. Seasonal ski tours are organised to the surrounding countries. Foreign students’ accommodation: The University maintains its own apartment house consisting of 24 furnished apartments, which are available to students of the Foreign Language Programmes. Information about the rental rates is available from the Foreign Students' Secretariat. The Secretariat also provides help in finding private accommodation. Contact person: Ms. Andrea Lehocki-Balog General information: The Hungarian Accreditation Board accredited the medical and pharmaceutical programmes in 1998. The faculties are listed in the directory of the World Health Organization. In a university survey our school was ranked as first within the Hungarian medical schools on the basis of value and marketability of the training and the degree received in Hungary. The medical programme fulfilled all the criteria of a visiting committee the New York State Educational department. Our programme is accredited by California State. Our students can participate in clinical clerkships in approved training sites in California and our graduates can take part in postgraduate training programmes and become licensed in California, provided all licensing requirements are met.
Preparatory courses: These courses are organised for students who require additional instruction or review in basic sciences and languages (English, Hungarian) to prepare them to take the entrance examination for admission into the regular degree programmes of the University. The course organised by University of Szeged is eight months long, starting in October each year. The language of instruction is English. The course accepts 35-40 students. The tuition fee is 4700 USD. Credit system: Courses are offered under the European Credit Transfer System Partial training and credit transfer possibilities: Medical training in German is offered for 4 semesters to obtain “Zeugnis der Ärztlichen Vorprüfung”. Students can continue their studies in our English programme or transfer to Semmelweis University, Budapest Hungary to finish their studies in Hungary. Credit transfer is subject to European Credit Transfer System regulations. Admission process & requirements:
Applications are accepted from graduates of accredited high schools or colleges. Applicants are required to be over the age of 18 in the year of application. Entrance examination: Entrance examinations are held in Hungary and at different locations in Europe, Asia and the United States between 20 March and 20 August each year. The decision about acceptance will be made on the basis of documents submitted and upon an entrance examination, which consists of a written test (Biology, Chemistry or Physics and English Language) and an oral interview (Biology and alternatively Chemistry or Physics). Application Procedure: Application forms may be obtained from the Foreign Students' Secretariat. The completed forms should be sent back to the Secretariat, together with all the necessary enclosures. Deadline for application: first round 15 February and second round 31 July 2004. Late applications can be considered on request. Notice: Students are expected to learn the basics of the Hungarian language during their first four semesters, in order to perform personal interviews with patients, beginning in the fifth semester. Juli. Auswahlkriterien: Grundvoraussetzung für eine Bewerbung ist das Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife. Eine Aufnahmeprüfung gibt es nicht. Lediglich jene, die nicht über ein Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife, erworben an einem Gymnasium in Deutschland, verfügen, müssen sich einer Aufnahmeprüfung unterziehen. Die Auswahl erfolgt aufgrund der vom Bewerber eingebrachten Unterlagen. Nicht berücksichtigt werden Bewerber unter 18 Jahren und jene, die das Studium Anfang September nicht beginnen können. Bevorzugt werden Bewerber unter dem 30. Lebensjahr. Da das Studium an der Allgemeinmedizinischen Fakultät der Universität Szeged stark naturwissenschaftlich ausgerichtet ist, werden jene Bewerber bevorzugt, die – neben aufzuweisenden Abiturleistungen -

Nach den zwei erfolgreich abgeschlossenen Jahren kann das Studium auf dem englischsprachigen Studiengang der Universität Szeged fortgesetzt werden, bzw. auf dem deutschsprachigen Studiengang der Semmelweis Universität in Budapest. Allgemeine Informationen: Bibliothek: Die Medizinische Bibliothek wurde 1946 gegründet. Sie beinhaltet 142.000 Bücher und Zeitschriften, und hat eine direkte med-line Verbindung zu den europäischen medizinischen Datenbanken. In der zentralen Universitätsbibliothek können die Studenten aus etwa 1.250.000 Fachbüchern und Zeitschriften wählen. Der Bau eines neuen 16,000 m2 grossen Gebäudes für die Universitätsbibliothek ist im Gange. Nach Beendung der Bauarbeiten wird die Universitätsbibliothek so als die grösste Bibliothek der mittel-osteuropäischen Region gelten. Computerbenutzung: Den Studenten stehen die Computer im Lehrstuhl für Informatik zur Verfügung. Freizeit und Sportmöglichkeiten: Für das Sportleben der Universität ist der Lehrstuhl für Körpererziehung verantwortlich. Die von dem Lehrstuhl angebotenen Programme und Aktivitäten umfassen Tennis, Schwimmen, Fitness und Konditionstraining, Skilaufen und Rudern. Den Studenten stehen weiterhin die Sportplätze der Universität zur Verfügung, wo sie unter anderem Fussball spielen können. Die Studenten können auch aus einer Vielfalt von Hallensportprogrammen wählen: Tischtennis, Wasserball, Handball, Basketball und Volleyball. Der Lehrstuhl organisiert im Winter Ski-Touren zu den benachbarten Ländern. Weiterhin bieten sich ausgezeichnete Möglichkeiten zum Rudern und anderen Wassersportarten. Gelegentlich werden auch Wander-Touren organisiert. Studentenwohnheim: Die Universität verfügt über ein Studentenwohnheim.
