Objectives
The key objective of this work package is to make connections with European industry, especially SMEs, in order to determine its needs and requirements for thermal metrology information, knowledge and training and to ensure that the information generated by the technical work packages is important to industry and that it is presented in an easily accessible and appropriate format for the various industry sectors and different geographical regions in Europe. This will be achieved by:
Dividing European manufacturers into industrial sectors with common thermo-physical needs and setting up representatives for each sector.
Investigating the differing regional needs of the specified industrial sectors within Europe and developing mechanisms which will enable EVITherM to communicate effectively to each region.
Establishing regional platforms to facilitate access to EVITherM for SMEs in countries with languages different from English. The regional platforms will be designed to encourage interested parties in eastern European countries that are applying for EC membership and countries outside the EC with languages different from English to take an active part in EVITherM.
Determining and implementing databases of information required by industry, other than the technology covered in WPs 4-9, such as manufacturers and suppliers of thermal equipment and services and appropriate training sources throughout Europe.
Assessing the need for specific Internet based training packages for selected industrial sectors and developing these where necessary. In addition, e-mail based discussion groups will be developed to monitor the needs and views of all EVITherM users.
Description of Tasks
Task 3.0 To create a forum to identify and define relevant industry sectors with interests in thermal metrology. To review how these industrial sectors in Europe can be divided into regions to facilitate the best level of communication and to determine how EVITherM can best service the needs of knowledge transfer to and from them – months 1 to 6.
Task 3.1 To compile a list of the specific information needs relevant to each industrial sector– months 3 to 9.
Task 3.2 To define the needs of regional SMEs and of eastern European countries. Determine the form and content of regional platforms and review it with interested parties especially in regional industry and in eastern Europe – months 6 to 12.
Task 3.3 To compile region specific best practice guides, relevant regional testing resources, equipment, and calibration advice. Compile review of regional topics of interest and an overview of where future work is required. Communicate regional needs to other WPs – months 9 to 18.
Task 3.4 To organise translation of the web site content into regional languages where necessary to ensure a uniform and high level of communication with industry, especially SMEs, across the Community – months 12 to 30.
Task 3.5 To compile (months 9 to 18) a database for related technologies and resources comprising:
Manufacturers of thermal equipment and supplies which are not covered by the topic related databases in WP4 to 9
Service providers including testing laboratories and consulting and other expert services
Providers and suppliers associated with thermal technology applications (e.g. insulation, furnaces, heating elements, ceramics, etc).
Training courses with a list of European institutes, e-training facilities, videotapes, books and publications
Task 3.6 To implement a system of determining industry’s needs for knowledge and training and to assess the feasibility of e-training in this technical area via the Internet. This task will involve the use of a subcontractor who will develop relevant training packages. Although the EVITherM business plan does not predict any income from training until year 4 it is proposed that training packages developed in this task will be evaluated and refined with the help of selected users in years 2 and 3 so that they are suitable for use during year 4. – months 9 to 30.
Task 3.7 To develop a newsletter format to give EVITherM members a regular updated list of training courses and seminars, conferences and new training materials. An e-mail forum will also be developed for members in order to establish exchanges between industrial and academic laboratories – months 12 to 30.
Deliverables
D3.0 List of industry sectors relevant to thermal metrology, month 4
D3.1 Report on the information required from the VI by each industry sector, month 9
D3.2 Report defining the regions identified to enable the VI to communicate effectively with industry, month 9
D3.3 Report defining the form and content of the regional platforms, month 12
D3.4 Set of approved and reviewed data and articles for phased insertion into the regional platforms – Phased across period months 12 to 30*
D3.5 Set of approved and reviewed data, articles and training materials for phased insertion into the live EVITherm web site - Phased across period months 12 to 30*
Milestones and criteria
M3.0 Publish analysis of needs of industry sectors for thermal metrology information, month 9.
M3.1 Definition of regions across Europe to enable effective communication of the VI, month 9
M3.2 Formulation of content of regional platforms, month 12
M3.3 Phased completion of approved regional data and text inputs, months 12 to 30*
M3.4 Phased completion of approved data and text inputs on training, months 12 to 30*
* Note. A plan defining the target dates for phasing information generated within this WP into the EVITherM website will be developed by the steering committee in WP1 during the first 6 months of the project
Interrelation with other work packages
This WP is crucial to ensure that EVITherM satisfies the requirements of European industry for thermal metrology information, knowledge and training. It will therefore be carried out in conjunction with all of the other work packages. The industrial sectoring will allow the data from WPs 4 to 9 to be configured and presented in such a way that data accessibility will be optimised for the target users. Similarly the regional platforms will provide regional access routes to information where this mechanism is identified as a necessary requirement to increase take-up by industry. Finally the supplier and service database will provide the EVITherM web site with early content for the initial free access pages and later in the project the training database and possible e-learning material will feed into the members restricted areas of the site.
