This committee decides on grants from a National Geographic Society endowment fund to universities with independent school district partners for Texas geographic education that total an average of $75,000 per year. I am one of five members, each appointed by the head of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

    1. When Dr. Tillman was hired in 2000, we divided the advising duties as follows: he was to be the official advisor which would help in gaining his tenure and I was to be the unofficial advisor, a mentor to help students achieve their goals and dreams. Once Dr. Tillman gained tenure, we did not see the need to change the status quo. Since that time I have averaged at least two or more students per week in this mentoring capacity. I admit that this a rough estimate in that I have never kept a score sheet. I have advised on geography courses, the major, the minor, graduate schools, careers and employment opportunities, travel, internships, independent studies, study abroad, field trips, and personal issues.
