MMedWeb – Multimedia Medical Conceptual Web for Intelligent Information Access

Principal Investigator: Leow Wee Kheng, School of Computing, National University of Singapore

This project aims to use data mining of hospital PACS and RIS and other medical informatics databases to create a new way of visualizing patient data and clinical history through integration, intelligent classification and clustering of events and investigations.



2005–2007

Nanoparticles of biodegradable polymers for new-concept chemotherapy

Principal Investigator: Feng Si-shen, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, NUS

This project involves development of drug-loaded biodegradable polymeric nanoparticles to treat animal tumour models, with simultaneous incorporation of commercial clinically approved iron oxide nanoparticles to provide MR imaging localization of the particles in vivo.



2005–2007

Use of Diffusion MRI for evaluation of treatment response of liver tumours undergoing image-guide ablation therapy

Principal Investigator: Sudhakar Venkatesh, Diagnostic Radiology, NUS

This clinical project is aimed at prospectively determining whether diffusion MRI is useful for depiction of tumour viability in the liver before and after locoregional image-guided therapy



2004-2007

Use of Multidetector CT Scan in the Management of Patients with Acute Lower Gastrointestinal Haemorrhage

Principal Investigator: Goh Poh Sun, Diagnostic Radiology, NUS

This clinical project is aimed at prospectively evaluating the role and performance of multidetector multiphase contrast enhanced CT scan of the abdomen for detection and localization of acute lower bowel bleeding, with the aim of facilitating and directing treatment.

This project surveyed the range of diagnostic findings in patients who present to Accident and Emergency with acute hip pain and a suspected radiographically occult femoral neck fracture.



2003–

Evaluation of Autologous Cartilage Repair in the Knee using Contrast-Enhanced MR Arthrography

Principal Investigator: James HP Hui, Orthopaedics, National University of Singapore

The project evaluates the MRI findings before and after autologous cell-based arthroscopic repair of articular cartilage ulcers using 3D MRI with and without intra-articular injection of dilute MR contrast agent.



2003–2006

Virtual Spine Workstation

Principal Investigator: Teoh Swee Hin, Mechanical Engineering, National University of Singapore

This project aims to develop computer-based models of the human spine using a combination of clinical-level CT and MRI and micro-CT to develop meshing models of bone, to develop computer simulations of bone architectural strength and behaviour. These meshing models will be used to model and simulate response of osteoporotic bone to the addition of bone cement used during the procedure of vertebroplasty. They will also be used to simulate mechanical changes of the spine during various motions, and to develop a simulator for surgical training.

This was a broadly multidisciplinary program involving Engineering, Radiology and Orthopaedic Surgery. I am co-supervising one PhD student who is working on meshing models and cement vertebroplasty simulations.


2002-2003

Brain MRI volumetry in early dementia patients.

Principal Investigator: Martha Chiu, Psychological Medicine, National University of Singapore

The project aims to develop a psychometric scoring system relevant to Asians to test for the development of dementia, and to compare this with 3D MRI scans processed using manual and semiautomated volumetric evaluation of whole brain and hippocampal volumes.



2002-2003

3D models of ancient pre-Angkorian skeletons with computerised skeletal reconstruction and anthropomorphic measurements using high-resolution 3D CT imaging.

Principal investigator: Rethy Chhem, Diagnostic Radiology, National University of Singapore

The project aims to develop expertise in NUS across the Faculty of Medicine and between Medicine and Arts in evaluation of skeletal remains from Southeast Asia using a unique imaging tool, multi-detector CT, to acquire high resolution scans of the entire skeleton.



2002-2008

Multidetector CT for pulmonary embolisation assessment.

Principal investigator: Dr Sudhakar K Venkatesh, Department of Diagnostic Radiology, National University of Singapore

The project aims to determine best visualization methods to detect pulmonary embolism & pulmonary artery anatomy.



2002-2004

Imaging of Ossification and Incorporation of Synthetic Biodegradable Bone Scaffolds for Cranioplasty Burr Hole Defects

Principal Investigator: Dr. TC Lim, Department of Surgery, National University of Singapore

This project was a collaboration between Department of Surgery, the Division of Bioengineering and the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at National University of Singapore to demonstrate progressive ossification of a novel polycaprolactone biodegradable burr hole plug cover, after seeding of with autologous marrow cells and surgical implantation, using CT scanning.



2002-2003

3D modeling and tissue extraction of the orbital soft tissues using MR data

Principal Investigator: Dr Shantha Amrith, Ophthalmology, National University Hospital

The project aims to use MRI data to collect imaging data of the orbits to enable 3D model development for volumetric analysis of orbital components.

Efficacy of an abbreviated MRI scan protocol for assessment of acute stroke

Principal investigator: J. Chong, Dept. of Diagnostic Radiology, NUS

This study evaluates the efficacy and accuracy of a new brain MRI protocol used for acute stroke patients who are moving and uncooperative.

Fine needle aspiration of the lung: effect of immediate cytologic review on accuracy and safety

Collaborative research into the accuracy, efficacy and safety of fine needle biopsy of lung lesions performed at NUH from 1997 to 2000.
