THE SEMANTICS OF VERTICAL AND BROKEN LINES

IN BELIEFS OF TURKIC PEOPLES

(Symbols of the cult of "tree", "rain stone", and "column")
Summary

Since the ancient time, the semantics of vertical and broken lines demonstrated its characteristic traditional features in the decorative and applied arts of ancient Turkic peoples.

In all the areas of decorative art, line motives, such as "rain", "rough tree", "column", "stone" etc, were used. This was due to factors that were generated in space and time as a result of the relationship between the man and nature.

The study of the meaning of the usual vertical and broken lines depicted on ancient stone figurines, ceramics, carpets and other works of decorative art is of huge importance not only for understanding the purpose of objects on which they are represented, but also for a more profound understanding of the national folklore. These motives have left traces in the mentality of Azerbaijani Turks, influencing their mytho-genetic outlooking.

Key words: broken lines, flat, turkey, vertical, rough tree, column, stone, carpet, Mecca-Medina.
