The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery combines an academic hospital service with teaching and research. The department has responsibilities for both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Research is an important part of the agenda of the department and includes clinical and laboratory research. However, obtaining funding for research continues to be difficult.

The Division of Emergency Medicine is split equally between UCT and Stellenbosch University. It has a service element at various academic and satellite hospitals, and teaching and research responsibilities. DIVISION OF NEUROSURGERY
Head of Division - Professor Jonathan Peter
Divisional Profile
Professor Taylor and Dr Le Feuvre’s neurovascular service is gaining ground yearly. Recognition of the excellence of their work has resulted in them being invited to speak at many neuroscience venues. Dr Taylor has been an invited speaker at the 2005 WFITN Meeting in Venice, The South African Heart Association Meeting in George, Health Administrators Meeting in Cape Town, The South African Interventional Meeting in Pretoria. Research of the mechanism of HIV infection and intracranial arterial dissection is being continued, as well as differing concepts of the development of new symptomatic cerebral aneurysms after previous treatment. Dr Le Feuvre completed his third session of masters training in Thailand.
Professor Semple is continuing with his research and compilation of data on the combined experience and the management of pituitary apoplexy between the University of Cape Town, Groote Schuur Hospital service and the University of Charlottesville in the United States. He was a visiting professor and continuing this research in March 2006 at the University of Virginia at their invitation. Research in 3rd ventriculostomy and the use of ventriculostomy in neurosurgery continues at Groote Schuur Hospital and Red Cross Hospital, Professor Semple and Professor Fieggen presented a practical workshop at the PAANS Congress in Lagos, Nigeria. Professor Semple was recently appointed the Regional Representative for Southern Africa in PAANS.
Dr Welsh continues to run a busy spinal service at Groote Schuur Hospital where he works in close association with Dr Dunn of Orthopaedics. Recognition of his work and teaching ability has resulted in him being appointed to the Faculty of AO Spine in Europe. This is a prestigious award as AO is one of the leading spinal organizations internationally.
Professor Fieggen had an active year, presenting his research work regarding the Cape Town Stereotactic Pointer at the 34th ISPN Meeting in Vancouver. He also took part in neurosurgery workshops in Cartegena, Columbia, as well as in Taipei and Taiwan. He was an invited speaker at the Paediatric Anaesthesia Congress, and the Paediatric Fresher Congress in Cape Town.
Dr Figaji presented his research work and attended the ESPN Meeting in Martinique, and visited various centres in the United States in connection with the establishment of an advanced monitoring system for the management of head injuries at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital.
Professor Peter attended the World Federation of Neurosurgery Society’s Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland and addressed various issues concerning neurosurgery education in Africa and in particularly South Africa.
