Divisional Profile
The Division of Urology is centred in Groote Schuur Hospital but has urological input at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, Victoria Hospital Wynberg and Somerset Hospital. At these hospitals outpatient, inpatient and operative urological services are available. Dr John Lazarus is an Acting Consultant at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and does once a week sessions at Tygerberg and Groote Schuur Hospitals.
At the recent Societé Internationale d’Urologie Congress held in Cape Town was awarded the Storz Prize for the best Urology Registrar.
Dr Andre van der Merwe was promoted to Senior Specialist. Drs de Bruin and Sinha passed the College of Medicine FC Urology finals in October.
With Groote Schuur Hospital a number of specialised clinics have been evolved. Some involve collaboration with other specialties such as Oncology and Urogynaecology. Other clinics run entirely by the Division of Urology are stricture clinic, stone clinic, reconstructive clinic and the haematuria clinic.

Dr. Colin Cook: Dr. Colin Cook acts as a consultant to the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, the Bureau for the Prevention of Blindness, the Department of Health's National Blindness Prevention Programme Committee and to Christoffel Blindenmission. Dr. Karin Lecuona: Dr. Karin Lecuona acts as a consultant to the Western Cape Prevention of Blindness Committee. She is an invited member of the Executive Committee of the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa, and serves on the Committee of the College of Ophthalmology of South Africa.
Professor Anthony Murray: Professor Anthony Murray is Co-Chairman Sub-Saharan Africa Region, International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness; Member International Affairs Committee, American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus; Board Member of the Pan Arab African Council of Ophthalmology. He serves as a member of the Department of Health's National Blindness Prevention Programme Committee; the Committee of the Bureau for the Prevention of Blindness, and on the International Advisory Board of the Journal "Survey of Ophthalmology".
