Our excellent international and local reputation is based on our focus on Immunology of infectious diseases and allergy, which includes a strong specialist diagnostic service provided by the NHLS. Moreover, we generate and characterise novel and worldwide unique transgenic mice, as animal models for human diseases, also applicable in other biological fields. We made important advances in diseases such as Tuberculosis, Bilharzia, African Trypanosomiasis and cutaneous Leishmaniasis and contributed to a better understanding of immunological mechanisms on a cellular and molecular level. Basic research in the Allergy Section has focused on the T cell cytokine responses to allergens (immunotherapy) and mTB protein as well as the application of novel assays to identify sensitivity to sulphites, latex, insects, spider-mites and food. Clinical trials in the UCT Lung institute have been conducted in the areas of antihistamines, asthma and eczema. Of note are our sound internal collaborations with other UCT Departments. Together, these activities have fostered our international and national relationships, achieving new collaborations and funding sources. This, in addition to our teaching commitments resulting in promising research projects for Honours, MSc, PhD and postdoctoral students. Moreover, a recent award received by a prestigious collaborative NRF/ Royal Society program and endorsed by a new UCT lecturer position will facilitate our focus on excellent research and capacity development within our Division for the coming years. Staff in this division are drawn from the University of Cape Town, the Provincial Health Sciences (PAWC) and the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS). Diagnostic laboratories are located at Groote Schuur hospital (C17) (NHLS), the Old Main Building (H47 laboratory) and at the UCT Lung Institute (ADCRU laboratory). In addition to the diagnostic laboratory service the division provides clinical services at Groote Schuur and the Red Cross Childrens hospital. These include the Allergology and Immunology and Latex clinic at Red Cross Hospital, ward consultations in the field of allergy for all disciplines in the hospital (medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology and the ICUs). The unit also provides a diagnostic and consultation service for drug allergy and occupational allergies. The areas of research interest include allergen immunotherapy via the sublingual route, the significance of autoantibodies to the IgE receptor in patients with chronic urticaria, the applicability of CD63 as an activation marker of basophils in latex allergy and penicillin allergy, food additive hypersensitivity and the follow up and care of patients with inherited immune deficiency of the 6th component of complement who suffer from recurrent meningococcal meningitis. A clinical research and allergen immunotherapy component is housed at the University of Cape Town Lung Institute as part of its university based activities. Iqbal Parker Divisional Profile The Division of Medical Biochemistry is a preclinical, basic science division in the UCT Faculty of Health Sciences. Our principal functions are teaching and research. Undergraduate teaching is in medical biochemistry to MBChB students. Postgraduate teaching includes a vigorous Honours course (within the School of Biomedical Sciences) and MSc and PhD programmes. Our research activities fall into 5 major areas: (1) Regulation of collagen gene expression; (2) proteolytic processing of membrane proteins; (3) cellular and molecular biology of breast, cervical and oesophageal cancer; (4) endocytic processing with particular emphasis on mechanisms for intracellular survival of mycobacteria; (5) molecular reproductive endocrinology; and (6) identification of anticancer drugs in natural products. The Division also houses two MRC Research Groups; the Oesophageal Cancer Research Group funded by the MRC. This Group includes researchers from UCT, UNITRA, Stellenbosch and the MRC with Professor Parker as the Director while A/Professor Arieh Katz and Dr Colleen Flanagan are co-directors of the MRC/UCT Research Group for Receptor Biology and still has a very active collaboration with Professor Millar who is the Director of the MRC Reproductive Biology Unit in the United Kingdom. Professor Parker continues to run the U.N.E.S.C.O. Molecular and Cell Biology Network laboratory, which allows access of UNESCO funds for training of scientists from developing countries. Professor Thilo has ongoing collaborations on mycobacterial research with groups in France and Germany.
