Divisional Profile
In response to the major HIV pandemic, HIV research is a major thrust of the Division of Medical Virology including HIV diversity, pathogenesis, immunology and vaccine development, other research interests include human papillomavirus, hepatitis viruses and emerging pathogens. The research groups continue to receive funding from several different sources. Professor Carolyn Williamson’s HIV diversity and pathogenesis group have received funding from both the Centre for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Immunology (CHAVI) and Global HIV/AIDS Vaccine Enterprise (GHAVE) in support of the HIV Vaccine Global Enterprise. The HIV vaccine Development team headed by Professor Anna-Lise Williamson and the HIV Diversity Group Headed by Professor Carolyn Williamson had SAAVI funding renewed for a further 3 years. Dr Jo-Ann Passmore had a new SAAVI grant awarded. Dr Darren Martin has received funding from The Sydney Brenner Trust and the Harry Oppenheimer Trust. Other research in the division is funded by Poliomyelitis Research Foundation (PRF), National Research Foundation, DST Innovation Fund, European Union and the Japan Health Sciences Foundation,,
Dr Wendy Burgers was awarded an Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellowship award and Dr Darren Martin and Dr Jo-Ann Passmore received Wellcome Trust Research Career Development Fellowships in Tropical Medicine. Dr Craig Corcoran and Dr Marvin Hsiao were appointed as consultants / lecturers on joint UCT/ NHLS staff.
Members of the Division have been very active in the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IIDMM) administration, serving on the membership committee, the executive management committee, Professor Carolyn Williamson contributing globally through participating in the Biomedical and Clinical Sciences Working Group of the African AIDS Vaccine Programme, WHO; Scientific Advisory Board of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative. Professor Anna Lise Williamson continues to serve on the PRF Scientific Advisory Panel.
The Diagnostic Virology laboratory, under Dr Diana Hardie, received ISO17025 accreditation from the South African South African National Accreditation System (SANAS). The team, led by Professor Anna-Lise Williamson, has obtained SANAS confirmation of good laboratory practice (GLP) compliance a laboratory for established to test vaccine potency of candidate HIV vaccines.
Members of the Division of Medical Virology were co-conveners for international meetings and were active in organizing conferences. Professor Carolyn Williamson Co-organiser of, and Temporary Advisor at the HIV Vaccine Immunology Workshop in Senegal. She also performed the role Temporary Advisor at the WHO-UNAIDS AAVP Consultation: development of a new AAVP 5-year Strategic Plan and the VIth International Congress of the Federation of African Immunological Societies in Kampala, Uganda, She was also a Rapporteur on Virology at the AIDS 2006 conference in Amsterdam.
