In genealogy they state there may be facts that you may not want to know & this is it for me. The following is Wm. Smith's pathetic record!
IN the 1860 US Census he is living living with a woman "Sarah" who owns a farm. Her last name is "Smith" so she may be his wife! She gives her age as 22, although on the original microfilm the age could be 32 & his age is 36 (which doesn't jibe with all the ages he later will give in the Athen's Infirmary.) There is listed children, Jeremiah, age 10 which is probably not the child of Sarah is she is truly 22. Caroline, age 8; Theodore, age 6; Samuel, age 4; & Nathan, age 2. Warren is not listed although I have him born in 1859 thus he should be on this census. William, Sr. later brings 4 boys to the Athens Infirmary, namely Samuel, Nathan, Warren & Thomas hence I feel no doubt that this is the father of Watten S. Smith my g-grandfather. I certainly am not sure who the mother is of all these children however. They all give there place of birth as Ohio but William, Sr emphatically states he is from Pennsylvania repatedly during his multiple visits to the Athen's Infirmary.
Sarah is listed as his wife in 1860 US Census & a marriage record is found to a William W. Smith & Sarah Evener in 1847. I can't be sure she is the mother of all these children since the kids report "mom dead" in 1865 & this lady per Family Search records lived till 1880. So got to keep looking!
"William Smith was admitted to infirmary March 21st. 1860 by order of Trustees of Canaan Township. Age 45 years, birthplace Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Residence in said township 5 months. Previous habits not known. Present condition destitute and crippled through excessive cramp. Has never been warned out, reason not stated. Entered By order of Directors. Hiram Fuller, Supt. William Smith left Infirmary April 2nd, 1860 by his own accord being legally discharged by the Directors." Page 35.
"William Smith returned to Infirmary Dec. 28th, 1860, by directions of Trustees of Athens Township and order of G. J. Gould, Infirmary Director. See page 28. Hiram Fuller, Supt. William Smith left without Notice or liberty Feb. 25th, 1861. Being the second time when clothed. Discharged by order of Directors. (Entry above seems to accompany this one, on page 47. This deals with being admitted with a William Courtney who is in the same shape.)
There is a reference on page 114 & 115 to the 4 boys (Samuel, Nathan, Warren & Thomas) being admitted to the Infirmary on the same day & Nathan stating "his father is William Smith & his mother is dead." She is still not definitely known.
"William Smith a pauper from Rome Township was received into the Infirmary April 17th, 1866. Age 48 years. Birthplace State of Pennsylvania. Length of residence 6 years. Previous habits Idle. Present condition has the Pox bad and entirely destitute of any means of support. Re’d by order of Directors. Hiram Fuller, Supt. Sept. 4th, 1866 this day discharged by the Directors." This is on page 124.
"William Smith a pauper from Bern Township Athens County, Ohio was admitted into the Infirmary September 26th, 1866. Age of said Smith 55 years. Birthplace State of Pennsylvania. Residence in Ames township 8 to 10 years. Previous habits are universally bad. Present condition, very bad with bloody flux and nearly naked and entirely without means of support. Received by order of Directors. Hiram Fuller, Supt. January 21st, 1867 William Smith was discharged from the infirmary being restored to health." This is on page 132.
William Smith a transient pauper sent to the Infirmary by the Trustees of Athens Township March 25, 1876. Age 44 years. present condition partially paralyzed. By Order; Jack Sanders, Supt. Discharged April 6, 1876. This is on age 197.
So at this point he probably has a stroke & made no more visits to the infirmary & I presume died around 1877. No records are found of death and/or burial.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Athens county poorhouse was established in 1857 by the county commissioners, acting under authority granted them by the legislative act of 1816 which gave them the power to purchase land and construct poorhouses in which to care for the county’s indigent. By the same act the commissioners were authorized to appoint annually a board of seven directors which was authorized to make rules and regulations for the management of the institution and to appoint a superintendent. Accordingly, in 1857, the county commissioners purchased a farm of one hundred and forty seven acres in Dover township near Chauncey. The old farm buildings were remodeled and used for the purposes of the home until they were destroyed by fire in 1903. Temporary quarters were constructed for use until the modern buildings, now in use, were completed.
The present plant, built at a cost of $45,496.43 and having a capacity of one hundred and fifty inmates, is very well planned and equipped. The institution is maintained at low cost to the taxpayers of the county because of its efficient management and also because of the policy of “self-help” employed to encourage a feeling of self-respect on the part of the inmates.
While old age pensions and other forms of social aid have reduced the number of inmates, approximately fifty are cared for by the institution at present. Mr. Bert Daugherty is superintendent.
All records are located in the superintendent’s office, county home.

Notes for SARAH EVENER:
Found this in Family Search. It is in Athens, Athens Co., OH at the right time frame I doubt that she is the mother of some of these kids because the kids report "mom is dead" in 1865 at the Athens Infirmary.
So got to keep looking!

Notes for WARREN S. SMITH:
My g-granfather was always the mystery man in the family. He always said he was an orphan & he knew nothing about his parents. A birth certificate does NOT exist since they began in Ohio in 1867.
His death certificate says his father was "James Smith" but that info was given by my g-grandmother who I knew & she was hard of hearing & her name was Jane Smith. I have found a pattern of "James Smith" being in other questionaires & I feel she gave her name instead of the proper name. The obituary does not list parents.
My g-grandfather, however, was taken by James Hemry at the age of 5 to be raised. This is substantiated in the book "Hemry Family History Book" by Larry H. Hemry on page 467, he states that James Harlan Hemry kept a meticulous history of the family & states that "John Hemry, Jr was known as a a good & religious man, a person of strict honesty and exceptional kindness. A case in point is that he states that Warren Smith from boyhood was a mechanical genius, a natural born electric wizard, he was taken from an orphanage home in Morgan (incorrect-was Athens Co.) County, OH, (see below) when he was about 5 years old by John Hemry, Jr. Thus when John was 66 years old after raising 15 children of his own & some of Mary Skinner Crider Hemry's, John took this boy & gave him a home." Thus we have a 5 year old Warren Smith, who you would think would know his father & mother's name? However, John Hemry lived in Perry County, OH.
I wrote the Probate Court of Morgan Co., OH in 2005 & no information was available ie. birth cert.
In the 1870 US Census, when he was 10 years old, he is living with the John Hemry, Jr. family with John being 71 & Mary Polly Skinner Hemry being 71. (Roll 125, pg 108.)
A 1880 US Census page with Warren living with the John H. Hemry family in Bearfield, Perry Co., OH. I believe John Saltgaver Hemry is who he is living with since the names of some of his children (especially Aurilla C.) coincide with this man's family although in the 1880 US Census the head of household is John "H." Hemry!! which was John Saltgaver Hemry's father and he died in 1879 with Mary dying in 1877. So the census taker wrote the wrong initial!!! John Saltgaver Hemry is Hannah Hemry's brother. Hannah later marries George Roberts, ancestor to Mary Jane Roberts who marries Warren Smith. In 1880 he is 22, single & is a farmer. He gave his trade as electrician and coal miner also. He was a grocer (in later life) with his grocery store about a block from his house in Hemlock, OH. The bldg is barely standing in 2004. He was a very good, God-fearing man per family lore.
Warren had to get permission to marry Mary Jane since she was under age. The marriage was solemnized by S. R. McDonald, Justice of the Peace on 6-9-1884.
In the1900 US Census, (S 530, Vol 123, ED 67, sheet 2, line 36) there is the following found: Warran (misspelled) age 41 H Birthplace-OH, (Mary) Jane W, age 31, born in OH in 8-1869. John-2/1885, age 15, Anna, OH, born 8-1887, age 13, Albert-born 8-1889, age 4, Edgar-born 1-1896, age 4 & Mainard (misspelled)-born 1-1898. They were in Monroe Twp, Perry Co., in the Congo precinct.
In the 1910 US Census: Perry Co., Corning OH, Smith Warren H W 52 Ohio, Jane W 41 Ohio, Edgar S 14 Ohio, Maynard S 12 Ohio.
In 1920 US census he is living in Hemlock, Perry Co., OH with his wife. His parents are noted to be born in OH but then look semi-rubbed out??
In the 1930 census he says his parents are from the "United States." He is living in Salt Lick Twsp. in the village of Hemlock, OH. In the "History of Perry Co., Saltlick Twp." it states that "Hemlock is a small village, situated in the eastern part of the township. It contains a postoffice, store, woolen mill, and a number of private residences. Saltlick township was organized about 1823, and received its name
from a deer-lick, near where the town of McCuneville has since been built. It was six miles square when first organized, but a small portion of one corner was taken to help form the new township of Pleasant."
I did learn he owned a farm & he could read and write.
He died of influenza with contributory disease being arteriosclerosis at the age of 77 years, 1 month, 23 days old. He died in Hemlock, Perry, Co, Ohio and is buried in Oakfield Cemetery aka Presbyterian cemetery. This cemetery is on Ohio state route 13, 5 to 6 miles north of Corning OH. The grave is 10 foot from a large tree near the front fence which is overlooked by an old white Oakfield church. Many other Dawson and Plant relatives are near by. I have death certificate in my files.
Richard Dew of Columbus OH graciously sent a copy of the "New Lexington Daily News" and it mentions his sons as Edgar, Maynard & Albert BUT does not mention John S.!! Also mentions Amanda "Anna" Smith Uhler his only dtgr living in Zanesville OH, Looked at John S Smith death cert & he says these people are his parents & indeed in 1900 he is listed as a son. (Newspaper needed a better editor) No picture of Warren or Mary Jane is available. I took a photo of her in 1947 but it is lost.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On 7-14-2005 I was called by Barbara Nicholes from Craig, CO, of all places. She is related to Denver Hambel! She had found data from the Athens County Infirmary Index Volume One (1857-1884). It was transcribed from microfilm. Available at the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus, OH. She found Warren Smith listed along with a male adult (William Smith) and 3 other boys (Samuel, Nathan and Thomas) all coming the same night seeking care. Nathan, an older brother, states his father is William Smith & his mother is dead. They are in a terrible destitute state.
The record states "Warren Smith a pauper from Rome Township received into the Infirmary August 8th, 1865. Age of said Warren 5 years. Birthplace Ames Township. Length of residence in Rome Township 4 months. Previous habits unknown. Present condition naked and without any means of support. Red’ by order of Ezra Goodspeed, Director. Hiram Fuller, Supt. Living with Mr. Emery (should be Hemry, this was a common mistake) of Perry County."
My g-father, John S. Smith, named one of his son's William which is interesting. I think there must have been a code of silence existing & he in all probability told his eldest son but very few people.
He turned out a fine man despite his early beginnings thanks to John Hemry, Jr, the patriarch of the Hemry family, who raised him from the age of 5.

Notes for MARY JANE "JANIE" ROBERTS:
Mary Jane "Janie" Roberts was my great-grandmother who was our "Grandma Smith" since Sarah Dawson Smith died so early in life. She helped raise John A. Smith and was his surrogate mother. She was a small, grey-haired lady who wore her hair in a bun. She was certainly no bigger than 5 feet tall and weighed less than 100 pounds. She wore "granny glasses" which fitted her image. She was quiet and very religious. She belonged to the Protestant church, nearly across the street from her home in Hemlock OH. ?Disciples of Christ back then. As she grew older she did become more "senile" and difficult to handle but was a delight to know. Her biggest claim to fame is that she took great pride in NEVER eating a RAW tomato because "they did NOT LOOK GOOD!"
I used to love to go to her house in Hemlock, Ohio because it had a trap door in her bedroom floor and the bed sat over it. There was a passage way down to the living room and it opened via a false wall aside of the fire place and I sure liked to play there. It is said that she did use it once when the Dalton gang, desperados of ill repute came to the house or town or something like that. The house still stands (2000) and is located in the village of Hemlock, OH which is found by going to Corning Ohio via state route 13 then going right on State route 155 west to Hemlock which is very tiny hamlet. There is a Main St. and the house is brown and is south of 8835. The building 8790 Main St. was where Warren Smith ran a grocery store.
The one thing I remember was she cooked pork chops for me and gave me one-half of one! I was hungry but nothing would make her give me the other half. It is too bad I didn't follow her advice my whole life as I now weigh 200 big ones. She collected dishes & they were beautiful with some still in the family.
She stayed with us at 421 Waneta Ave. (John A. Smith family) for awhile but eventually went back to live with her son, Maynard, on Guernsey Dell Ave. in North Dayton. She died on the day the Korean War started which was 6-25-1950 or 1951 at her son's Albert's house in No. Dayton. She was 81 years, 10 months, 22 days old. She is buried aside of her husband, Warren S. in the Corning, Ohio cemetery called OAKFIELD. This cemetery is on Ohio state route 13 near Corning OH. The grave is is 10 foot from a large tree near the front fence which is overlooked by an old white OAKFIELD (? Baptist) church. Many other Dawson and Plant relatives are near by. Her name on her tombstone & Perry county index of births is Mary Jane although every where you search it is always "Jane." One picture did exist but is now lost.
Her parents are buried in Asbury, old spelling, Asberry Cemetery, Perry Co., OH, 393440N 0820703W.

Notes for EDGAR H. "ED" SMITH:
Ed Smith was a thin man who was sort of an intellectual. He liked to tinker with electrical motors etc. He did not have any children I believe. As a young man he had pulmonary tuberculosis and was treated in various tuberculosis sanitoria (hospital) in Dayton, Ohio. He was a difficult patient because he did not take his med etc. (as they all did then.) He lived to be an old man however.
We have a picture of him on a post card-like card as a young man. the card has a woodsy picture of a deer on it. He is also pictured with his 3 brothers on another picture but I am not sure who is who.
He was born in Monroe Twp, in the village of Congo, OH.
Found in Social Security Death Index an Edgar Smith b: 1-17-1896, d:6-1968, # 298-09-3202 living in Dayton, OH. This could well be him (I may have the wrong birthdate!) Need more research.
